i think there would be other parts of the profile that IMD replied for exec MBA.. i have 9.2 years of exp and was suggested a regular MBA.. FYI the average work ex is still ~9 years at IMD
Right ! Beyond just the number of years of experience, schools can also place greater emphasis on factors like:
Career progression (Have you reached a senior manager, director level?)
Post-MBA goals (If your goals are a significant shift requiring a deep full-time MBA experience, you can argue for it.)
Fit with the class (Younger average age means you need to show collaborative spirit, willingness to learn from younger peers, and openness.)
The Schools also focus on people who want to grow personally and professionally. While work experience matters, clarity of purpose, humility, leadership potential, and international outlook can also weigh equally.
If the candidates career trajectory is already very senior or you are looking primarily for networking and leadership refinement rather than a foundational career pivot, the Executive MBA might indeed be a better fit. However, if you have a strong case for needing a full-time immersive experience (like major industry/career switch, move to consulting, entrepreneurial plans), you can still push for the regular MBA, but be prepared to justify it clearly in your story. Consider networking with the alumni and adcom for more insights. Good luck : )
