Query for CRACKISB / THINK ISB and other helpful members...

a bit abt myself
M/ Indian/ 28 yrs age/ WE- 7.5 years ( 3 yrs ops; 1 yr EA to MD Hindalco; 1 Yr- R& D; 2.5 yrs- Metals projects/logistics)

GMAT 1 570 ( Q 44/ V 24) & GMAT 2 680 ( Q 47/ V 37) - within a span of 40 days latest GMAT on 14th july.

I am just too keen on ISB. My questions:
1 ) What factors should i highlight in my appl
2) Is a ops/project- greenfield exp a rarity?
3) How crucial are recos and how crucial is the designation of person signing it
4) Can essays come from heart ; cos most essays i find as sample essays are pretty decorative
5) my chances?

Dear meghash3,

Please find the answers to your queries;

1 ) What factors should i highlight in my appl
The application is pretty exhaustive. It will ask you all possible information regarding your acads, work ex and extra currics. I can tell you what to put only if i have a complete idea of your profile.

2) Is a ops/project- greenfield exp a rarity?
Not a rarity, but definitely a plus. You can differentiate yourself much better.

3) How crucial are recos and how crucial is the designation of person signing it
Recos are used to get a better idea about the person. The application is something you draft. The LORs are something what others feel you are. There should be a sizable overlap between the two. The designation of the evaluator does not matter though. Choose people who know you well.

4) Can essays come from heart ; cos most essays i find as sample essays are pretty decorative
Essays are meant to be from the heart. But they have to be put forward in a presentable and professional manner.

5) my chances?
I need more info about your acads, projects, extra currics to do a brief profile eval.

Hi all,

I have given my GMAT and got a decent score of 750 and 5 for AWA.
I have 2 years of work ex. i initially worked as a Sales Engineer trainee at Blue Star. I am presently working with Infosys as a Systems Engineer. My academic record is pretty good throughout.
Can someone throw light as to what are my chances of getting into ISB.I am a bit tensed because my work ex is just 2 yrs which is below the avg work ex of 5.
Also please advise me as to which universities i could apply to with my profile.

Dear KKumar,

This is too little info to comment. But a cursory look would say that you are good as far as the 'analytical horsepower' is concerned. The work experience is on the lower side. That is why you have to work on projecting how you were a fast learner and have taken up more and more responsibilities at work at a rate much higher than that of your peers.

The ISB website says:
Due to the high volume of applications we receive each cycle, the Admissions Committee strongly encourages applicants to apply in the first cycle as space in the class may be limited by the second cycle.

I am worried now because I was planning to apply in R2. Any thoughts? Thanks...

Hi Niladri,

You have a decent chance of getting an interview call from ISB as your profile is different.

Try to get something like 680. Anything above that will obviously a bonus.

Use your essays well and highlight the plethora of experience you have.

Very good GMAT scores.
How much would be your exp when you join ISB in 2011? 2 yrs exp could be considered less, as the avg exp have been around 5 yrs for previous batches. Unless you can provide some good reasoning for your maturity (by ECs, leadership initiatives etc) and "why MBA now" you may like to consider applying next yr. Your Eng. from top US school would always be a plus.

Bigoyal: It was a great idea to organize the chat. A few suggestions:

Preferred time: Saturday Evening/Night (Would be good for people from US who want to participate). One more suggestion: It was great that ThinkISB participated in this one. If possible try to bring in more alumni who are working in other different areas (e.g. Banking, entrepreneurs, technology)

Dear Shaz24,

ThinkISB has a strong base of ISB alumni working in various industries. Based on requirements we can organize a panel of experts for the chat.

Hii Friends...

I just need your inputs regarding my application.

A brief of my Profile :
1) GMAT : 640 ( Q 50, V 27 ) ( :( Planning to retake GMAT on 18th Aug'10.)

2) Grad Edu : Mining Engineer, Indian School of Mines, 8.13 / 10 ,
4 Gold Medals, and 2 Research papers.

3) Work Ex : 3 years , Manager (Mining Operations), Tata Steel

Another point I need to discuss about which application phase to apply. Is there a remarkable difference between first phase of application and Second phase applications.

Thanks in advance for your reply.. :)

Hi,
I am taking my GAMT on 19-Aug-2010. As ISB's first round deadline is 30-Aug-2010, any suggestion whether I should apply for in the first round itself? So far I have not done any research on the essays etc. and I would not be able to do so until 19-Aug. Do you think 10 days are enough to do all the research and apply?

Any idea whether there are any disvantages of applying in R2 as compared to R1?

Please suggest.

Hi Balraj,

If you have not done enough research on the essays, 10 days are way too less to write an effective application. We normally recommend at least a month to refine the essays and bring out the maximum impact. With an ineffective application, it is disadvantageous to apply in R1 over R2.

We suggest you spend time on your essays and apply in R2.

Hi rangasayee,

Your essays should be in easy to comprehend English. UK or American, it hardly makes any difference as long as it is English.
