Are you sure it happened for R1 candidates too? I thought only some R2 candidates got added to R3.
Do you when/how the indication for this is received? Is it conveyed at the time of R1 results, or is the portal just stuck at verified but no rejection mail is sent?

A few R1 candidates were called for interview in R2. A few candidates who had applied in R2 got calls for interviews as far as 3 months out in early march and feb (after the R3 deadline). Also, the results were floating for R2 atleast. A few admits were rolled out in between, and the final result included decisions for both R2 and R3 together.
However, please keep in mind that many people believe that last year was a black swan (kind of ) event with multiple changes in the admission process. Many of the processes have likely been smoothened and I don’t think any such things would replicate this year
