In the chat room, we are currently debating 2 issues:

1) Did a rejected applicant hack Kellogg server and cause this mishap?

2) If one of us reply w acceptance to the offer email, can this be binding as long as it's done before they retract the offer as mistake...
Ninkorn, I would have loved to try second one, but alas! no options :)

Hi All,

My first post here although I've been following the forum for the last couple of weeks. Good luck to all those with 'dual status'. The admissions office is probably open by now ... waiting to see how this unfolds. In any case, I think the adcom will probably spend the day cleaning up this mess - we shouldn't expect too many decisions to go out today ... or until they figure out what went wrong.

Cheers!

Hi all,

I'm in the same situation -- email accept, status reject. I just put a call into the adcom and they said there was an "error in their messaging system" last night. Wouldn't really elaborate, they took down my number and said someone would contact me later. Good luck, all.

No, email is not legally binding.

Still no update to the admit e-mail/deny status issue?

Good luck guys! I hope the online status deny was a screw-up.

I believe this issue came up when someone posted a way to break into the HBS status computer - Somewhere in all the legalize there a blurb that says they have the right to change offers, change status, etc. So even if you get an email, they could change it, not honor it etc. In the HBS example, those that had an admit found a nice DING a little later.

I think trying to "force" them to honor an admit email is not even reasonable. As I'm sure we all know, email is easily spoofed -- I would just send myself the admit email then respond I accept, and voila' -- be in every school I choose.

For that matter, yes, Scarlett Johnason, I do want a bigger unit, and I'll be glad to call you and arrange a date -- cause your email said you'd hook up with me!

Later -- RJ

they email would only be binding if they made you an offer and you accepted and gave "consideration", ie, paid a deposit, withdrew from other schools, etc.

I don't know if even that would hold. After all, they can repeal admissions offers late into the process if they discovered you lied in your app. I can't imagine that these schools don't have WIDE latitude about who they admit.

I don't think an e-mail or an acceptance is binding by any means. If you get arrested after getting accepted the school can take away your offer.

Instead of worrying about the legal ramifications of this fiasco, I think Kellogg will be more worried about its reputation. Regardless of whose fault this was, the adcom's image will suffer especially if this story is leaked to the press and published in something like WSJ/NYT/CNN. If this was an accidental e-mail error that was sent to only a few people, I wouldn't be surprised if Kellogg just honored the e-mail in order to avoid an embarassing situation.

I agree with what you guys are saying, but they need to be responsible for the consequences of their actions and if someone who didn't check the site to find out that they had the rejection letter (which I have to image at least a few people did) and went to work today and told their boss they got in and withdrew other school apps etc, then Kellogg could have a serious problem on their hands if they didn't honor the letter. I mean would royallly mess with someone's future! I know I had to go back and tell my recommenders to keep writing the recs (after having sent an email telling them not too) and call my parents and tell them I was not in fact in and then they had to call tell people they had called.... and so the humiliation chains runs deep!! At least for me and I can't imagine I'm the onlly one who was freaking out excited about the acceptance and immedatetly blasted everyone! the perils of instant communication of wireless technology.

I am so sorry to hear that suntaurian. The e-mail fiasco was a bad stomach punch. As river suggested, you might as well ask for some feedback (try to make the best out of a bad situation). I'm really sorry about this and hope you get into all your other schools.

Guys, I just wanted to say I feel real bad for those who got that ding/acceptance. For those who turned out that it is in fact a ding, I am doubly sorry.

I am not one of those people. My status is still the same. But I think that is real unfortunate. And it does not make Kellogg good. All the time spent in those applications individually, I think they should make darn sure that the absolute worst thing does not happen, which is what seemed to happen to Sunatarian.

Really sorry to those folks who this happened to.
