Getting a waiver is not a bad thing. It is not an indication of how Kellogg views anyone's candidacy. In fact, prior to issuing a waiver Kellogg has not even read the application. They issue waivers so that they can read the application w/out the interview. I would say that the majority of people who receive waivers later get invited for an interview.

Err on the side of ethics and inform Kellogg if they do assign you to an alum that you already know. They will find someone else or schedule a skype interview with an adcom.

Too late! Interview already complete. I met the alum at the Kellogg admissions event here in Dubai, so its pretty obvious that many of the applicants would have met him and conversed with him and its pretty obvious to the adcom also that many of the prospective applicants would have turned up at the admissions event and many alums would also have turned up and conversed with the prospective applicants.

If there should be no prior contact with the alum who is interviewing, then the whole set of alums who were present for the admissions event cant interview the applicants and that would completely make a huge chunk of Alums in-eligible to interview!. So the adcoms are pretty much aware of the alums at the admissions event interviewing the applicants who attended the admissions event. So, conclusion: No ethics violation here :).

Nevertheless, My interview is done and dusted! I cant do much but for wait. :)

I see that you have got into Kellogg and dropped in apps for R2. Is kellogg not your first choice?

Oh I don't think that an applicant and alum interviewer should have had no prior contact. I interpreted the question to mean a deeper relationship. Like a coworker or school friend. An alum that folks meet at an admissions event doesn't really count as a personal contact, ya know. I was moreso referring to a situation where you had more of an associate/friend relationship with a potential interviewer. Plus I was moreso responding to the idea that receiving a waiver was something negative.

As for submitting R2 apps after the R1 Kellogg admit, it's in no way reflective of my impression of Kellogg. I simply do not have a first choice school. I chose schools that I would love to go to and decided to divide my apps between rounds to manage the workload. Although I got the Kellogg admit prior to R2 apps I felt that I may later regret not applying elsewhere just for peace of mind that I'm truly ending up at the right school. If I don't get in anywhere else I am beyond happy to go to Kellogg. If I get into any of my R2 schools I will choose where to go based on the financial aid packages and how I feel at admitted students weekend. There is a very good chance that when the dust settles I will end up going to Kellogg.

Not that you need my blessing, but having met an interviewer before at an admissions event is not the same as "knowing" the person. "Knowing" the interviewer implies you are friends with him/her or worked with him/her before, which could give you an unfair advantage. I'm not sure there is an ethics problem in either case as long as your interviewer is objective (but that is on the interviewer not you), but there certainly isn't an issue if you met the person before at an admissions event.

Congrats on being done with your interview. I finished mine last week. Now the long wait.

In the case of the alum interviewer being a friend or coworker I do think it's the right thing to do to at least let Kellogg know. It may not be a big deal to them, but it's just good to be cautious about these things. That's all I was saying.

Interviewed off-campus today. It was like nothing mentioned on the forums, but thoroughly enjoyable. Got couple of brain teasers too with an option of choosing numbers based questions or computer science algos (CS undergrads both of us).

I had my interview yesterday. Lasted for an 1hr20min. I had prepared myself for the standard why MBA, why Kellogg, why now questions but the interview was more probing and deeper than I expected it would be. Oh well. It's all done.

+1 to that. Similar experience here too.

It was good in a way that it was more personal and robotic recitation of essays was not needed. The interview was situational and the best way to practice would perhaps be to understand your resume and essays thoroughly (rather than just state facets), and try to understand how you would handle certain scenarios (unhelpful team member etc.).

or simply: Just go with it.

It was off campus with an alum. It felt more like a conversation and less like an interview. There were a lot of whys, as in why did you take this decision, why did you choose to work at this company etc. I said that for a project I rallied a team and he asked me "why did the team listen to you and not to the other guy?". I was like :wtf:. All I can say is be prepared for the unexpected.

It was like I was catching up with an old friend. Heck, at the end it wasn't even about Kellogg. We were just discussing about different work environments in different countries. Infact I even asked him why he didn't ask me the "why Kellogg" question. He just :-D.

PS: I could have been lulled into a false sense of security :P.

OK it's been 6 weeks since Kellogg received my preference for an off-campus interview and I live in a major city where a shortage of alumni is unlikely. Also, I know of at least one person in my city who already has interviewed, not two blocks away from me. From last year's thread, almost all off-campus interview invites were sent out by the first couple days of February.

In other words, my finger is now getting dangerously close to ze dreaded panic button.

Roll call: All y'all US applicants - how many of you have yet to hear from admissions about your off-campus interview?

I have yet to hear back - middle sized city with a number of alumni here...

I've never really understood the obsession with buildings and how that factors into rankings. I guess it may indirectly affect who applies or makes students rank the school more highly in terms of overall satisfaction, but it seems to be more about vanity.

I would not worry about not getting an invite. Unlike almost every other school this has no barring on your chances of admission. Kellogg does not start reviewing applications until interviews are complete or waivers are issued. Just hang in there and everything will work out.

I received an invite today. Following is the text:

"Dear Applicant,

Upon review of your file, the Kellogg Admissions Committee would like to schedule a telephone interview with you. Please contact our office at the number below to arrange an interview appointment.
"

The mail clearly mentions that invite is sent after review of file!!

Did you initially receive an interview waiver? This would be why the invite was sent based on a review of your application.

@ cheetarah1980 - No, I never received a waiver. This is the first communication to me fom the school.

@ vaibhav - I chose my interview location as Mumbai. I guess, there are no interviewers available in Mumbai, thats why I have been told to schedule a telephonic interview.

May be, review of file just means considering my option of off-campus interview, and not really the essays and other stuff.
