Based on Avernusaur's stats it may have been totally random. His(or her) GMAT score and GPA are higher than mine. Granted those two numbers aren't the end all be all it is encouraging for people who haven't heard yet that not hearing today isn't the end of the world.

Good luck to everyone who got an invite.

I think when the say initial interview list they mean just that. It's not a final one and it doesn't have anything to do with which batch of invites you get lumped in. My guess is that they give all the apps a quick reading to gauge who has the ability to get through the rigors program. Then they give each app a thorough read through before extending interview invites and once again after the interview. Those that have received invites have already had the second reading. Those that haven't may only have received one brief reading.

Of course that's just my way of dealing with not getting an invite yet. I highly doubt that the adcom would question my ability to get through an MBA program given my background, so I'm a bit skeptical to say that gmat/gpa/we are the only factors at this point.

Care to share your stats? Just to give you an idea, my friend was 3.7 chemical engineering, with a 760 GMAT. He got an invite earlier today. He's pretty young with almost 2 years of exp.

Out of the 48 applicants here from GC, 12 got interview invites. We still have one more date to wait for the interview invitation (November 12th). Congrats to all who did get an invite - hopefully you all ace your interview. For those of us who are still in the running for the November 12th batch, good luck to us all!

Your friend's numbers are very impressive. Even though your friend's stats are stellar, I think the reason he got an interview was because he had more than just impressive stats. He was probably a very well rounded candidate.

After reading this thread, a lot of 750+ scorers didn't get an invite yet. The number invited so far is about 25% of the applicants. Usually, they invite about 50%.

I don't think there is any preference (from an admissions standpoint) of being in the first batch except that you get your interview out of the way sooner. The committee has to go through 490 applications several times over and must interview 250 of them. It takes a lot time and it's very likely that about half of them haven't received a thorough reading yet.

490 applications in 14 days is 35 applications a day. That's a lot.

Guys, don't get discouraged, I think all of you have a good shot at it. My 'stats' are nothing to brag about...650 GMAT 3.4 GPA (Comp Engr). I was pretty nervous about getting an interview.

However, I do have stellar experience at a top management consulting firm and have moved up fairly quickly in my 4 years out of undergrad.

My point is I think they are looking for well rounded candidates as well and not just 770 gmat...

I concur.

But how did you end up with the 490 number? Is that the applications received within the 1st deadline.

490 is just the target class size....in all i think they get around 10 applications for each spot....so say about 4-5000...and maybe 1/3rd to 1/2 of that in round 1....

oops misread the Ross blog post.

Last year they had just under 2700 applications. A bigger portion probably came in the first round. I have no idea how many of those came in the first round.

My speculation:
First round is usually above 40% of the total apps for a given year. They're definitely reviewing more than 490 for the first round.

yup you are right about the total applicants...i just saw that their acceptance rate is around 20%...i was thinking it was around 10%

25% makes perfect sense. Half of applicants are rejected, and half of the other half (one-quarter) were invited for an interview today. The other quarter will be invited for an interview Nov 12.

I guess on Nov. 12, all R1 applicants will know whether they were invited for an interview or waitlisted.

As someone who didn't receive an invitation today, I know how the rest of you uninvited feel right now. Sucks, right? I could be completely wrong, but I'm going to share with you my optimistic point of view.

Applicants who received an invitation today have until November 19th to schedule and complete their interview. The next batch (presumably the other "half") will receive their invitations on November 12th, leaving practically no overlap in the interview schedule (you're unlikely to interview on the same week you receive the invitation). Based on the end-to-end scheduling of these batches, I suspect that this is simply a tool for them to evenly distribute all of the interviews. While we all would like to have been included in the first batch, I suspect that there is no greater or lesser chance of acceptance from the second batch.

Congrats to everyone who got invited today - you're in the finals!

For everyone else, have a beer with me and mark November 12th on your calendar :beer

I agree with your opinion. There has been no pattern or formula to fit the candidates who received an invite today. It is not like only the top notch stellar profiles received an invite today. It seems to be a mix.
