Thanks Terry & Shmegs!! I'm getting really excited about welcome weekend!

Terry - I've also heard negative things about the students at Wharton but based on the people I've met so far, I have to agree that that perception is unwarranted.

Shmegs - See you in July!!

Hey, fellas,

To those admitted to Wharton,

would you mind sharing a PORTION of your first essay with me? You can PM me with your essay.

I know that this is a bit absurd request, since I am asking for personal information.

But you can delete any information that may be sensitive, or you can simply PM the Why Wharton, WHy Now, Why MBA part only to protect your identity.

THank you so much, and I will never forget your humility in helping applicants out.

Thanks!

Question: what's the partying / drinking culture like in Wharton? And how about sports?

Audio, I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. I'll try my best to answer anyway, though :-D

I think Wharton students go out and have as much fun as at any other school. There are no classes on Fridays, so the weekend gets going on Thursday afternoon with MBA Pub. You pay a set fee at the beginning of the year for a year-long "membership," entitiling you to entrance (and free beer, wine, and pizza) every Thursday afternoon. Pub's a blast... if you're headed to Wharton anytime soon, I highly recommend checking it out. There are usually parties after Pub, as well as on Friday, Saturday, and (sometimes) Sunday nights. These are usually in Center City (where most students live), at bars/clubs/restaurants or at students' apartments. Philly has a lot of great restaurants and bars, so there's no shortage of places to eat and/or drink.

W/r/t sports... are you referring to intramurals? Do you have any particular sports you're interested in? Rugby and ice hockey are traditionally big draws. I think the rest of the offerings are pretty standard.

You can only get access to it if you are an active participant here. I believe there is a 400 post minimum (meaningful posts I should add). So stick around, participate, engage in discussion. Eventually you'll get access to it.

Good luck.

Xerox, Kalia2480, Audio and Nupurgupt:

1) Are you going to Wharton, or are did you get into/will be attending Stanford or HBS?
2) If going to Wharton, are you coming to WWW? Would love to see you guys there. I have decided I would matriculate anyway, since it's all being paid for  Now, if Stanford gets me off the wait list in May, I may reassess...But it's like a lottery anyway.

So looking forward to (re)discovering the Penn campus.

Wanderlustman - we are like twins, it's a bit scary :-) Are you W'03?

So I encourage to not reapply for 3 reasons:
1) You are 28 already - Stan and HBS hate older applicants
2) 2010 was a sucky year, but next year will be even worse. HBS at 10%, Stan at 5% (I'd say)
3) What can you really add at this point? Like me, you stats and w/e are great. Age + luck screwed us over

I encourage you to go to Wharton for 2 reasons
1) It's been proven (see my old post) that they do as well as HBS (but not Stan) in VC/PE
2) Wharton will be as hard to get in next year as Harvard was this year, percentage-wise

I would say reapply only in the following case: if, besides Stan and HBS, you would prefer some other MBA program over Wharton (whatever it is)

Other option is to not go at all (which, given where you are career-wise, may actually make sense) and do an Exec MBA in 3-4 years.

Just my $0.02

elha

I am definitely going to Wharton, and my deposit is already in. Wharton/Lauder is the only such program out there that allows combining my keen interest in China/Chinese language/Asia and International management/Finance/Strategy

I'm not going to be there on April 17-19 because Lauder starts in May, and I have so many things to wrap up and arrange before May 5th!!! I am running quite a tight deadline here.

Stanford is definitely a great school, but I just liked Wharton much better for its supercharged spirit and drive, and the diversity of people you meet there. The network is absolutely unparallelled.

I did not even apply to Stanford because I found it TOO conservative, and I thought it was not exactly what I was looking for in a B-school. I also decided against Columbia for that same reason. This is my subjective view, and is based solely on my own observations and interaction with students/alumni.

I applied to HBS just for the sake of it (and got dinged), but I was aiming at Wharton/Lauder as my top choice anyways.

Same here!
Have people finalized their housing or still not sure?

In response to your previous post elha, I'm most likely going to enroll.
Haven't done so yet though.

I'm still finalising my housing. Check out the housing guide https://clubs.wharton.upenn.edu/welcome/housing.html to look at the apartment in Center City. I went down to Philly last weekend and looked at a bunch of places, PM me if you have any questions.

Hey all. I agree, I think W is a great school and i'll definitely be at WWW. Look forward to meeting you guys. I'm getting in at 5ish on Thursday and staying at the Hilton Garden Inn downtown. No idea where i'm going to live yet if I end up going there. Unfortunately, Stanford (even though i'm WL) is still a better choice for me and my wife so we'll see.
