Some stuff about Wharton.

Doesn't matter .. cos you are coming to California! Kry, help me lobby for California, dude!

Kidding. Yeah .. all the students that I met at Wharton were very friendly and cool. Not one of them seemed hyper competitive or unfriendly. Wharton is a great school (But, so is Stanford  )

It's emphatically not BS.

I just got back from Wharton Winter Welcome (R1 Admit Weekend). At one point I was standing around with 4 other admits and the timing of interview invites came up. Two of the five were invited for interview on the very last day, and another was invited on the second-to-last day.

EX10XL, have you checked out the s2s board? The students and Adcom have said over and over that interview invites go out until the last day. And the timing of the interview invites is totally random, having nothing to do with application strength. They're not lying. One of the things I like most about Wharton is the transparency of the admit process.

p.s. Winter Welcome was amazing! My poor liver may disagree, however :-D I kept waiting to meet someone (current student or admit) who conformed to the Wharton stereotype of a hyper-competitive a##hole. I met a LOT of people over three days, and didn't meet a single person who fit the stereotype. On the contrary, everyone was incredibly cool (and really impressive!).

Whatever man. I have a 660 and probably the lowest quant in the entire applicant pool. I'm also applying to the Lauder Russian track and they only take 3-4 people a year. So yeah I'll be looking at G-town for next year. My expectations are crashing down to reality. And before you suggest that I retake the gmat, consider that I've already attempted it 4 times.

EX10XL, don't lose heart buddy. Interview invite or no interview invite, I'd recommend that you let some experts in the club analyse your essays. Low gmat (not that 660 is low) with good experiences and outstanding essays is still achievable. Wharton gave me a dose of reality as well by rejecting me without an interview in R1. At that point I thought my essays were pretty good. However, after some guns in the club analysed my essays and tore them apart. This was a wake up call which has helped me land two R2 interviews. The very best of luck.

One thing that I have going for me is that I am an outstanding writer. And having my mom to help edit was useful (she is a senior correspondent for a national newspaper). I did not show my essays to random people because they are somewhat unconventional. For instance I wrote about being fired from my first job in my failure essay. My multi-cultural experience was about that same experience (warehouse job in East LA). Leadership essay was about my experiences playing competitive sports my whole life (currently Rugby) and leading a project at work to integrate client service operations in an office overseas after my asset management firm made a major acquisition. Why Lauder was about how I want to use language skills (French, Russian) to become an institutional salesman in Russia marketing investment strategies. I briefly touched upon my extensive experience living in France (6 years) and Russia (1 year). All three 1000 word essays (including Lauder) were about 20% under the limit word wise.

I never would have applied except for a confluence of factors. I took Russian OPI on a whim and passed with advanced mid, and that same week my father called me saying that he met a Lauder alum who thought I should definitely apply based on my background. I flew out to NYC the next week (after getting the OPI result) and met the alum. He said my gmat shouldn't be a huge problem... so I decided to give it a shot. Later I visited Wharton/Lauder and got a great feeling from the people I met there.

Needless to say I did not check the box where they ask if you want to be considered for MBA only if application is not viable for Lauder program. So... I am not competing directly against any of you.

As I said EX10XL, the interview invite will go out till the very last day.
And as for the low GMAT, I have a 660 too (not to mentioned that I took it 4 times too) and I got my invite last week. So, don't give up just yet.

thanks uphill, bee and terry.
@uphill, yes of course there is hope. I am sure we will see more invites right up until feb 21st. So dont give up yet. I have realized that the invites come when you least expect it. So just let it go and get yourself busy in something else.

I have not visited the school so i am leaning towards an on campus interview. Will decide in a couple of days. Now only if Ross invited me then i would have landed at least an interview at all schools i applied to.

@terry and other people who have interviewed. Any tips/pointers ? any things to do? any specific thing to talk about wharton? things not to do ?

I have lost all hope for my application this season since I haven't receive an interview invitation from Chicago GSB. I thought I am not competitive and was already started making other plan. Then came Wharton email...

I have lost my interview virginity for this application season.
Pandeyrav congrats: yours and mine must be in the same pile.

Congrats to all those who received invites and good luck to everyone still waiting. I just got back from the winter weekend and most people I talked to received their invites during the last week in the period. Here's a quick impression of the school:

1) Huntsman Hall is great, the facilities are top notch, I think it was built in 2003.
2) The faculty that I met were incredibly smart + personable which bodes well for class
3) All the first and second years I met were having a great time etc...
4) The incoming students come from very diverse backgrounds ranging from military, ngos, consulting etc...everyone I met had amazing stories to tell but the best part was that everyone was humble...which is all the more amazing after you hear their stories.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and just wanted to share my thoughts. That and definitely work on improving your alcohol tolerance, my liver still hurts from the weekend :P.

Congrats pandeyrav, bkk145, Iwannabe and goodluck for your interviews.
Only three more days to go, but I feel confident about getting an interview invite. Gmatclubbers will beat the overall Wharton invite rate of ~45%

Thanks for the debrief shmegs. I too loved the Huntsman Hall when I visited in December. Top notch facilities and very lively with all the undergrad crowd in there..
