Could be wrong, but I'm getting the sense that schools are distancing themselves from finance backgrounds/those who want to remain in finance, esp investment banking. There's been talk in the news about this. Anyone else notice this? I have buddies from non-IB backgrounds getting interviews, but those with banking backgrounds and solid stats aren't getting them. Could just be my sense of things.

In my class at wharton, it seems every other person is PE or IB guy, so i wish they turn away from IB guys (because many happen to be DBs) but to answer your question, i am afraid you are wrong, the school continues to heavily admit finance industry guys

It truly does seem terribly subjective. I'm surprised that both shockwave1111 and scottnan were denied. Got the ding as well yesterday. Profile: late 20's, 3.8 GPA, lowish GMAT (650), top bulge bracket investment bank experience (2.5 years; started late), good EC and leadership experience, Latino, family man. And I *DID* use an admissions consultant. No interviews thus far.

I was rejected as well. US/M/28y/3.8 GPA from HYP/770 GMAT/Director/6yrs WE. This has been a very frustrating process. I'm not sure what the adcoms are looking for, but it surely doesn't place enough emphasis on quantitative measures of ability or success (GMAT, GPA, salary, job title), or I would have at least gotten an interview to one of these schools. I wonder how much the adcoms are like the old scouts ridiculed in Moneyball for having unjustifiable and subjective hunches about people.

To future applicants, I'd highly recommend contacting an admissions consultant who can help homogenize your application into the boilerplate schlock I've seen in the applications of my friends and employees who have gotten in.

Thanks to everyone on the site for your insights and lively commentary!

scottnan, what schools did you apply to. am surprised about wharton's decision on your app.

I read somewhere how close to interview closing deadline (Mar 4 for R2) one interviews at does not make a difference in the decision - is it because ad-com starts evaluating interview reports after mar 4?

Am trying to schedule an interview appointment and will not get time off from work until very close to Mar 4..

JK12- I think you should be fine. It doesn't matter when you interview as long as you complete your interview by the deadline.

thanks runnergirl..

am i the only one who does not find much information about wharton interview in the on-line application? Online application does define the steps i need to take to schedule the interview and its timeline, but it does not have info about how long the interview will be.

Should I ask my alum interviewer (while replying with confirmation of one of his suggested time) how long he plans to do the interview for, and what should I bring for the interview?

Any unwritten etiquette one has to follow in addressing the interviewer in emails and asking him questions...

Usually if your interview is with an adcom member or a student at campus, it will be 30 minutes long. From the experience of our international clients who interviewed with adcom at hub cities, adcom member is pretty good keeping it at exact 30 minutes since there will be applicants before and after your slot. Just get the copies of your resume and great confidence, and you should be fine.

Good luck!

got an invite, based out of India. Can anyone please confirm that Wharton is still interviewing candidates from the set of the 6 behavioral questions (the leaked ones ;)? Thanks

So anyone who has taken r2 interviews..are the interview questions seriously similar to leaked ones? in any which way..from the 3 other interviews i have given, which were actually alum interviews..most of the questions were on same lines.

But still, are they exactly same as the leaked questions?

I'm a bit new to this forum mostly because I didn't really expect to get a Wharton interview invite. I'm very curious to know if this is the case as well. In general from what I can tell the Wharton interview is behavioural on steroids- the worst of the worst when it comes to those kind of questions (i.e. tell me about a time when...).

Look for one of my posts a few pages back. I interviewed R2 late last week - the questions I got were drawn from the R1 behavioral questions.

Invited !!! I am still surprised as I have only 3.5 years of work experience. I guess that my essays got me through. I am female, Asian, working in buy-side investment.

Does anyone know which option is better: interview with adcom in a hub city or with alumni? Interview with adcom seems to be on tight time limit of 30', as far as I know?

3.5 years (4 at matriculation) is like the mode (i often feel the mode gets overshadowed by medians and means) for bschool now. Big contingent of '07 graduates at wwww.....

Yes. Hub interviews are usually of 30 minutes slot and taken by adcom members who will have a fixed set of questions for that time. Alumni interviews are usually more relaxed and can easily extend to more than 30 minutes. However, they are crapshoots and you never know what kind of alumni you land up with.
