Hi all,
I received an interview invite from Wharton on Friday, which was great since I did not receive one from HBS. So was feeling down, but it balanced out. Life is funny.
My profile: 28/730/Indian non-citizen male/3.4 GPA from Top 5 Liberal Arts/3.5 years management consulting/2 years Private Equity.
I am based in Chicago, and I am going to opt for the off-campus alumni interview. My reasons are as follows:
1) The on-campus vs off-campus interviews are weighted equally, which is what I have heard from students who have been on the Wharton AdCom, and have heard from other people as well. Has anyone heard otherwise?
2) The main reason is that the on-campus interviews are 30 minutes, if that, and are very cookie-cutter. So there is not enough time for me to tell my 'story' and really have the interviewer get to know me. Whereas the off campus interviews are longer, 1 hour or more, and I can really take my time and talk about a lot of things and really impress the interviewer. I have nothing to hide. I feel I will do better in a 1 hour interview than in a 30 minute interview. In a shorter on-campus interview, the person will just think ‘This guy is fine’, because it’s hard to really impress someone in 30 minutes (25 minutes really). But in a longer off campus interview I feel I can get a glowing recommendation from the interviewer if I can sell myself, which I believe I can.
I realize the downside of an off-campus alumni interview is greater as well (what if the person does not like you, or you just don't connect?), but I am prepared to take that risk.
Plus, you can do some research on your 3 potential off-campus interviewers and choose the 'right' one (i.e., the one who you can connect with the most), which is not an option with the student interviewers. Also, the student interviewers do 6 interviews back to back and can get tired, which can have an effect on their perception of you.
Anyway, these are my thoughts. I would love to hear what you guys have to say on this....
