Hey guys - long time lurker here. I am a round 1 W admit. I personally got a lot of good advice from this forum, so I figured I'd give back however I can. Let me know if you guys have any questions about the process - it's still too fresh in my head!

Good luck! :P

Hey everyone,

I'm waitlisted at Wharton and I want to start a thread for W WListers. Let's share ideas, and some advice about the waitlist process.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

What did you all do for reporting language fluency? I took Spanish in high school and in college ... but I am hesitant to include that here, even to accompany a "Novice" designation.

You know guys... my wharton essays (except the painful adapting/perspective one) is exceeding word limit by 10% or so (e.g., 560 instead of 500). Should i focus on cutting it down? Or is it one of those zero-impact excercises?

I'm having trouble with the 500 word limit on some of them as well, currently the "tell us a time when you solved a complex problem."

Initially, in my first couple versions of this essay I attempted to translate the details of the problem into laymens terms, and it became unclear and too long. As a result, I think I'm beginning to learn that I'm too interested in the details of the problem, and am failing to identify challenges and how I responded to them.

10% over the world limit is excessive. You need to cut it down. You should spend at least 50% of the essay describing how you responded to the problem, and what you learned; as a consequence, you can't spend too much time describing the problem itself.

Try talking through the problem with a lay-person, and then asking him/her to explain it back to you. They may have a more straightforward way of thinking about the problem.

Yeah--I am too. I was also having problems logging into Columbia's to look at a status update, so it could be an ApplyYourself thing, maybe?

Let's hope this resolves itself ASAP--I need to submit Wharton tonight!!!

Quick question: Did people who went to undergrad in the US tick the TOEFL waiver box (and if so, did you mention it in the optional essay as requested)?

Had a similar (or the same, i'm not sure) question: I'm a native-English speaking American who went to undergrad in the U.S.--do I need to check off this waiver box?

I'm assuming no.

I checked the box but did not explain it in the additional essay. I think either way is fine. If you went to a U.S. undergrad school, it should be self-explanatory.

I was asked by AdCom to put in a one liner in the optional essays explaining it. Dont know why since it is fairly self explanatory.

sm332--I think I remember seeing that you're an international applicant right? I feel like it's not necessary for American applicants who went to school in the U.S. as well, but I don't know. Weird. I think I'll just bet on them asking me if they're worried.

I just re-read the posts -- American applicants dont need TOEFL score. Only applicants from countries where english is not considered the mother tongue need to provide TOEFL or rationale from exemption (i.e., university education in English)
