cooldar
just got the invitation today.
Is is worth it to fly to Chicago for the interview? I am willing to if it will increase my chance of getting in. But at the same time, I rather interview with an alumni than an adcom so that it might be more informal.
I am in the SF Bay Area.
Officially, on campus vs not has NO impact. (and I believe that)
Some things to consider before you finalize your decision.
1) There's less you can say or do to hurt your candidacy in a 40 minute interview than in an unbounded interview with an alum (which can run 1 or even 2 hours). At the same time however, its much harder to connect with someone in 30 minutes than it is in 2 hours. Think about what you prefer: short and sweet - "rip the band aid off" approach, or a more lengthy "get to know each other" approach. Whats "right" will differ for individuals.
2) If you've never visited and get waitlisted later on, its probably easier to write a love letter about how you love the school if you've actually come to the campus. Otherwise, its pretty hard to sound convincing. Also, if you visit, and hate the heck out of the place, if you do later get waitlisted, you don't end up wasting cycles trying to get in.
3) I discovered that, this year, more of the adcom staff will be doing the interviews themselves. I'd argue that any face time with an actual decision maker is probably a good thing. Unless of course, you think you suck at interviews, in which case, it might be a bad thing. Of course, theres also no guarantee you'd end up interviewing with an adcom.
Just some things to noodle on ..
