what's your first choice rhyme?
MC doesn't sound like a fit for me (nor the application process)...
Well, it depends on how realistic I am....My utmost ideal is becoming an entrepreneur (for which I need a smashing idea... one of which I have and well see how it fares in the New Venture Challenge).. But I don't count that because frankly, I can become an entrepreneur any day I chose - you just take your money, quit your job and try to do something on your own. The MBA process is an opportunity to do something I couldn't otherwise do, so I'm leaving entrepreneurial aspirations aside until after my internship.
So.... what would my ideal be? I tend to think of things in terms of risk and reward these days... getting into X might be very risky (low odds) but exactly what I want... thus a high reward. Y might be a little less risky, and a little less ideal. So....
Probably not too surprisingly, my dream job is probably to go into VC. With that though, comes a hearty dose of reality - odds are, I won't be able to (lacking IB or substantial previous valuation / modeling etc experience), and frankly, I'm not willing to spend 2 or 3 years slaving in IB for a chance at it. Moreover, I don't want to go to PE, as I'm thoroughly convinced its an entirely overheated sector. So, barring VC, which, with a little luck I might get, but in all likelyhood wont, my second choice would be a corporate strategy or general management role with P&L responsibility. This is where I've focused the bulk of my energies because in the risk / reward category, it seems the most well positioned (some decent chances of landing a job, a pretty solid fit with what I want). Which industry you ask? I don't much care, but the ones that interest me most are energy and financial services. Third choice? Consulting. It offers the lowest risk (most likelyhood of an offer) with the lowest "reward". (for my own personal goals anyway)
