An excerprt from my CBS Interview -

Int: So how was your GMAT? What did you score?
Me: 710
Int: Hmm, I wonder why the avg scores in CBS and Stanford hover around 750

Result: DINGED

Well, dont want to read much into it, but looks like they are sensitive about the GMAT score -
But they DON'T! That is NOT true, according to CBS's own website! I am not suggesting for a minute that CBS is not GMAT happy - everybody knows they are. But on the website, here are the stats for the entering class of 2007: GMAT range of accepted students, 570-790, and middle 80%, 660-760. 750 average, my a**. In 2006, Columbia's average GMAT was 709. Again, uvs, if they did ding you because of your GMAT, I believe it, and you got screwed. But your interviewer had her head up her a**. Right, so in the past year, suddenly their GMAT average went up 40 points?? This, I'm not buying. Particularly since the jump would not have been something reasonable, like 660 to 680. 709 to 750?? Oh please.

Well who knows uphill.... everything was going well in the interview and she loved all my stories and even said that I think you should definitely be accepted. But in the end she asked, what was your GMAT and I was like it was XXX and she goes, oh that is low... did you ever think of taking it again and I said yes I have done it several times, but I am not good with standardized tests.... but I did well in college etc.... so anyways in the end she said well if you get waitlisted, here are a few things you can do because they only accept 16% of the applicants..... and she gave ms some examples of people who ever scored lower than me in the past and said one guy was rejected by columbia but accepted by Wharton...and there I was hmmm, now what will she write in my report :(

Anyways tt was a good experience though....

Well .. you guys should not take one person's take on a matter as a representation of the school's take (I am not saying that any of you did though  ).

If Columbia admitted 10% people who scored less than 660 in GMAT, and if Columbia has an average GMAT in 700-710 (Just like every other top 10 school), then that means that Columbia values GMAT only as much as every other top 10 school does. Otherwise do you guys think that it is difficult for just about any top B-school to reach an average GMAT score of 750?

ps. If any school does plan to reach an average GMAT score of 750, then please do inform me. Maybe that's the only way I can get an admit

Sorry all - I didn't mean to get testy. Chalk it up to my own irritability with the whole process, writing final essays, finishing apps...I've also grown rather attached to the folks on this site, so I kind of take it personally when schools somehow fail to recognize our collective fabulousness.

Hey, you never know. I think midnight on New Year's Eve gets the most credit.

Hey I'm a first year at CBS and they definitely look at more than just GMAT. No one talks about scores in school but I've looked through the 2nd year resume book and quite a few people are in the low 700s range. Career Services tells us only to report GMAT scores on resumes if it's 700 or above and there are also quite a few people with no GMAT score listed on their resume. If you're head to head with someone, all else equal, they might take the higher score so make your application an interesting read and you'll be fine. If a 710 took you out of the running, I wouldn't be here today!

Good luck on your apps!

Hey ap,

I'm still pumped about the CBS admit and I'm looking forward to attending next Fall; hopefully we will get to meet. Regarding your comment about putting 700+ on your resume, how do you think that affects students during the recruiting process? I have a 690, I want to transition from asset/liability management for a commercial bank to strictly asset management at an investment bank, and I would rather not take the GMAT just to get another 10+ pts for resume purposes. What do you suggest? Thanks!

Congrats on the admit, dj! CBS is awesome, you'll have a good time. To answer your question...I honestly don't know because I'm not doing traditional recruiting. Investment banks care a lot about schmoozing, almost everyone I know applying to the banks is applying for IB and everyone I know got about half the interviews they applied for except one girl who's a Feldberg scholar and got pretty much all the BBs. I'm pretty sure that they ask for your GMAT on the application questionnaire that you have to fill out on the bank's site in addition to the school resume drop so they'll know your score. I don't think retaking it for a 10-20 points gain will make much of a difference, but if you're really worried about it then you can ask career services as they'll be able to give you a more accurate answer.

I have never heard of putting GMAT scores on resumes. Do you think that makes the students unnecessarily competitive? I mean, if you made it to Columbia, the recruiters should understand that there's something special about you even if your GMAT isn't 700+.

I am confused about one of their questions on the application:

Have you ever spoken with a Columbia Business School MBA Program Representative or attended a Columbia Information Session? y/n?

then it asks:
If yes, please indicate with whom you have spoken.

what if you went to an info session and did not speak to someone directly?

Sorry if I'm sounding hard, I'd say that if that happened then you didn't take full advantage of the info session.
Anyway, in this situation I'd put the name of the staff who presented...

Kwam,

I appreciate your response, but sometimes I think its inappropriate to "vulture" the reps at the info session. I dont think fighting through a crowd in order to get 2 seconds of face time with someone that wont remember your name is worth my time. To say that I did not get the most out of the info session is hardly an accurate statement. I was able use things I learned at the session in my essays.

I see your point. I went to some info sessions that looked like a "war" to talk to adcom staff and alumni, but also went to some that I could really talk and ask valuable info. I just think that the time I spent talking to Linda Meehan asking some infos that I couldn't find anywhere else was valuable. Sorry for my "tone".

Is the word limit for Columbia strict. It says "recommended word limit 500" so Im assuming that I can go over. Am I right or wrong about this??
