Quantitative Review 2020 NEW QUESTION

Carl averaged 2m miles per hour on a trip that took him h hours
distance = (rate)(time)
So, Carl's travel distance = (2m)(h) = 2mh

If Ruth made the same trip in 2h/3 hours, what was her average speed in miles per hour?
average speed = distance/time
So, Ruth's average speed = (2mh)/(2h/3)
= (2mh)(3/2h)
= 6m/2
= 3m

Cheers,
Brent

Solution

Given
In this question, we are given
• Carl averaged 2m miles per hour on a trip that took him h hours.
• Ruth made the same trip in 2/3h hours

To Find
We need to determine
• The average speed of Ruth, in miles per hour.

Approach & Working
Both of them are making the same trip, hence, the distance covered by both of them will be the same.
• Distance covered by Carl = 2m * h miles = 2mh miles
• Distance covered by Ruth = speed of Ruth * 2/3h miles

As the distance is same, we can write
• 2mh = speed of Ruth * 2/3h
Or, speed of Ruth = 3m

Hence, the correct answer is option E.

The distance of the trip is 2mh.

So Ruth’s average speed was:

2mh/(2h/3) = 6mh/2h = 6m/2 = 3m

Formula: Speed =$$\frac{Distance}{Time}$$

For Carl:

Speed = 2m miles/hour

Time = h hours

Distance = Speed * Time = 2m * h = 2mh miles

For Ruth:

Distance = Same as that of Carl = 2mh miles

Time = 2h/3

Speed =$$\frac{Distance}{Time}$$ = $$\frac{2mh}{2h/3}$$ = 3m miles/hour

Check two different methods to answer the question.

Method 2 might sound really impressive.

Distance = S x T

Speed and Time are inversely proportional to each other, if distance is same.

Time changed from h hours to 2/3 h hours

hence, Speed will change from 2m miles per hour to 3/2 x 2m miles per hour

= 3m
