I was confused between A and D and went with A. My reasoning was the last written record by the 4th copyist is dated at around 1148 and we know that their were only 4 copyists who completed CB hence we can safely say that yeah this was probably completed in 1148 itself considering the 4th guy was also wiped out in the plague?

And lets say you have only one plague in 1148 thats true, but the letter can be written by the fourth copyist in 1149 who survived the plague and continued working on CB accounting for the fourth plague in his notes as well! Which doesnt really strengthen our 1148 argument

@‌GMATNinja @karishmab
Keep in mind that you are looking for the answer choice that "most strongly supports the hypothesis that Codex Berinensis was produced in 1148", not something that proves that the hypothesis is correct.

It's certainly reasonable to assume that a plague would disrupt the work. But if there were multiple outbreaks of plague in Florence in the 1100s, then there would be no way of knowing whether the disruption occurred in 1148 or, instead, during one of the other outbreaks. By eliminating that possibility, (D) certainly supports the hypothesis that CB was produced in 1148 (though it certainly does not PROVE that CB was produced in 1148).

"My reasoning was the last written record by the 4th copyist is dated at around 1148" - We are not told that the letter itself is dated to 1148. Instead, we're told that the letter mentions a plague that killed many people in Florence in 1148. The letter itself could have been written any number of years after that.

As mentioned in our original explanation, the lack of other handwriting samples neither strengthens or weakens the argument. Additional samples could perhaps provide relevant evidence, but a LACK of those samples isn't evidence one way or the other.

Hopefully that answers your question. If not, please clarify your thoughts on choice (A), and we'll do our best to help!

This is a classic GMAT CR strengthen question where you need to find what best supports a historical hypothesis. Let's break this down together.

Understanding the Argument:

The author is trying to prove that this medical manuscript was produced in 1148. Here's what we know:
  • The first 80 pages were written by one person
  • The last 20 pages were written by three different people (indicating disruption)
  • The fourth copyist mentions a plague in Florence in 1148

The conclusion? The manuscript was probably produced in 1148, with the plague causing the disruption that led to multiple copyists.

What We Need to Strengthen:

Think about it this way - we need something that makes the connection between the copying disruption and specifically 1148 stronger. The author assumes the disruption happened because of that particular plague.

Let's quickly evaluate the key choices:

Choice B: The plague lasted 10 months - So what? This doesn't make it more likely that this manuscript was being copied during that plague.

Choice D: There was only one outbreak of plague in Florence in the 1100s - Now this is powerful! If there was only one plague in the entire century, and we know the copyist mentioned a plague in 1148, then any plague-related disruption must have happened in 1148. This eliminates all other possibilities.

Choice E: Each successive copyist wrote fewer pages - This tells us about the pattern of disruption but doesn't tie it to 1148 specifically.

Notice how Choice D is the only one that actually makes the 1148 date more certain by eliminating alternative explanations. That's the key insight here - in strengthen questions, sometimes the best support comes from ruling out other possibilities!
