Please follow the rules when posting a question: https://gmatclub.com/forum/rules-for-po ... 33935.html Next, it should be: How many distinct prime factors does 5^40 + 5^37 have? 5^{40} + 5^{37} =5^{37}(5^3+1)=5^{37}*126 =2*3^2*5^{37}*7 . I am getting answer as 3 prime factors when solved as below:

540+537=1077 =>1*3*359.

Here 359 is prime number, so making a total of 3 prime factors for 540+537.

Let me know if there is any error in above solution.

It's 5^40 + 5^37 NOT 540 + 537

if you take 540+537 then also it will be 2 not 3 as '1' is not a prime number and can not be a prime factor
