Ross Class of 2017: GMAT Club Application Stats

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

“I think you are coming from the Detroit point of view. Times have changed now - Ross is a bit of everything for everyone with a relatively strong footprint in Consulting (all top 10 schools are strong in consulting) closely followed by Manufacturing and Technology sectors. See Ross's latest placement report.”
- Pratap92

“In speaking with current students, they especially mentioned that Ross has made a concerted effort to bump up its finance reputation. Due to a couple good years of recruiting, the big banks are coming back and increasing the number of offers they are giving to Ross students. One first year who had signed an internship offer with JPMorgan said they took 6 IB interns this year, having never taken more than 3. If you're into finance, Ross is becoming a hot spot!
- AM76N

“Obviously your chance of admission to Ross School of Business increases if you score higher on the GMAT. The good news is that Ross’s acceptance rate of 34% is significantly higher than almost all other business schools in the top 20. The Ross class of 2016 profile shows that the average GMAT and GPA are 3.4 respectively. The data used to create this analysis comes from GMAT Club. Of the applicants in my data set, 84% had GMAT of 700 or higher, which means that I am fairly confident about the relationship between GMAT and admissions in the 700’s but not as confident in the 600’s”
- ConsultingorBust

Ross has actually been my best application experience thus far. I've found them to be really transparent about the process, and very forthright about how things are going. I really appreciate knowing that a decision has been made, and I expect that there will be a blog post in the next few days with an update as when we can expect calls to go out next week.”

Applicant | Essays | Extracurriculars

wluck wrote:
So for the Ross application, we don't have to list our extracurricular activities?

This is the message I got:
This page is only required for Master of Accounting, Master of Management and Master of Supply Chain applicants.

Seems weird?
wluck wrote:
Is it also weird that there are no goals questions in the application? Didn't Ross ask for it last year?

Just because they don't ask for the goals in the essays, doesn't mean that they don't want to know them. You could be asked this question in the interview.

Otherwise, if you feel strongly about mentioning the goals in the essays then you might risk doing so in the optional essay. But, then in this case be sure that these goals become compelling reasons for them to admit you. Otherwise, it just means additional work for the adcom, which could backfire and go against you.

Edit: Same goes for the extra curriculars. - gmatbugsme84

ankurgupta03 wrote:
Any idea what to fill in the additional information section.
We already have an additional information essay, then what goes in here? :?:

Here's my understanding of the application:

Optional question: Is there anything not addressed elsewhere in the application that you would like the Admissions Committee to know about you to evaluate your candidacy? (300 words)
This seems like an invitation from the school to share additional information. Anything to STRENGHTHEN your application. This can also address multiple aspects such as extra-curriculars/activities/low GPA etc. MBA applicants can also talk about activities and honors here (the other tab is for non-MBA applicants). This does not have any one specific purpose.

If you need to provide additional information not provided in another part of the application, please upload below. Include your name and the type or purpose of the document in the header for identification.
This seems to be an opportunity to address any PROBLEM area on the application and seems to require a very specific and clear purpose. I do not think that this can be used to address Low GPA/ Extra Curriculars etc.

That would be the only difference IMHO. - gmatbugsme84

Current Ross Student | Optional Essay

rrai243 wrote:
guys,
can anybody confirm this
Ross application does not have any options for Goals.
Neither a goals essay nor a short question?

Good luck to everyone who is in for round 1. rrai243 you are correct that admissions is not asking for goals in the app. You will have the opportunity during your interview to let them know about your goals and "why an MBA" and specifically "why Ross". And you will need very well thought out answers to all of those questions. I would not use the optional essay to talk about your any of these topics either. Best of luck. - WhattheFuqua

This was the reply that I have received.

Ross wrote:

We do prefer to have the official score report at the time the application is submitted; however, we can use your self-reported scores on your application for evaluation purposes. An official GMAT score report will be required if you are admitted into the program.

So that confirms it. Submission of Official GMAT scores at the time of submission is preferred, but not mandatory at all.

Hope it helps - Dipankar6435

Any updates on how the event went?

Off the top, Bryan was very friendly, humble and open. He repeatedly told us that Ross admissions are not about finding excuses to Ding applicants, but to evaluate the best of the lot. Some interesting points that came up -

1. Ross had an yield of over 90% last season. That is close to H/S/W.
2. The alums present all had a few years' work experience in the US (either they had immigrated with family, or received a Masters Degree and pursued a career). That may be something to worry about for fledgling applicants from the country?
3. About half the cohort present had applied in R1, but Bryan said that the volume of R2 applications is higher. However, acceptance rates are roughly the same.
4. Interview invites should start rolling out globally on the 20th, but Indian applicants can expect to hear back between mid and late next week. - backspacebar

From Soojin herself:
"What percentage of interviewed applicants are accepted?

A high percentage, maybe 70%. I don’t know off the top of my head. Well, we try to interview people who are going to be wait listed as well so we get those assessments in advance. Those in round one who get waitlisted may stack up higher against those applicants in round two. So it’s nice to have already completed the interview." - DriverStuBenedict

Applicant | Interview Debrief

Had interview last night Oct 29th in D.C with former student who graduated in May and now works in the area. She had only seen my resume before last night:
Very conversational...we interrupted each other many times to both clarify and ask questions.

1) Walk me through from undergrad till now
2) Managing a team- what is your leadership style
**those two questions took a lot of time
3) is there anything you want to talk about (she mentioned that she hated preparing for an interview and then not be able to talk about certain things that she preped for)
4) then opened it up for questions
We had a lot in common so the 1st two questions took up over 30 minutes. Total interview 45ish minutes.

Cheers - automaddock

Just a Quick Interview Debrief for those who are about to be interviewed:

Interview was extremely conversational and it was conducted by 2nd year student who luckily had similar career goals as I have.

Points of Discussion:
(It was naturally a very resume driven conversation since they only have our resumes)

Walk me through your resume..
A teamwork experience.. ( Primarily from resume too)
Difficult person in a team experience and how you reacted or managed?
How would your boss describe you ( I stressed for more bad qualities than good !! :D )
Two experiences from my resume were discussed ( Make sure you know your resume)
WHY MBA? WHY ROSS? CAREER GOALS?

Last 5 minutes were given to ask questions and I asked about consulting and social life at Ross.

Irrespective of the outcome, please dont stress out as this one will be extremely conversational. Try to enjoy it ! Smile ! the person opposite you was at your place an year ago so he understands what you are going through!!

Best of Luck to all of us !! - kesanova20

I don't know about what everyone else thinks, but Ross has been the worst application experience of any school I've applied to or am working on. The application (as in the actual system that handles your information), constant tease emails, and the ultimate "we have your decision but won't tell you for a while" are just not a good experience. It reflects poorly on the school in general.

Ross has actually been my best application experience thus far. I've found them to be really transparent about the process, and very forthright about how things are going. I really appreciate knowing that a decision has been made, and I expect that there will be a blog post in the next few days with an update as when we can expect calls to go out next week.

I'm sure many of you are checking in on the Kellogg forum as well. The mysteries around the future of interview-waived applicants and video essay date changes have made an already stressful process even more so. With that in mind, I like the fact that Ross has been so straightforward and drama-free. - downeaster

Admission Consultant | School Stats | Admissions

Hi Ross applicants, it sounds like you have your decisions coming out in the next few days. I got a request from a Ross applicant to analyze the Ross acceptance rate. It might be interesting for you to check out while waiting for your response.

Good luck!

FROM MBA Data Guru: Ross Acceptance Rate Analysis
Ross Acceptance Rate Analysis

I received a request from the0ther0n3 to analyze the Ross acceptance rate after he saw the Stern acceptance rate analysis. I had not been planning to look at Ross for a few weeks, but if you request data analysis from me, I will do my best to finish that analysis as fast as possible. I plan to post the Ross admission calculator online as soon as I have time to build that portion of the website, probably over Christmas break. In the mean time I will share some of the insights I got from building the predictive model.

Ross Acceptance Rate by GMAT
Obviously your chance of admission to Ross School of Business increases if you score higher on the GMAT. The good news is that Ross’s acceptance rate of 34% is significantly higher than almost all other business schools in the top 20. The Ross class of 2016 profile shows that the average GMAT and GPA are 702 and 3.4 respectively. The data used to create this analysis comes from GMAT Club. Of the applicants in my data set, 84% had GMAT of 700 or higher, which means that I am fairly confident about the relationship between GMAT and admissions in the 700’s but not as confident in the 600’s.

Image
To create the graph above, I used the average GPA from my data set which is 3.42 and then shifted the GMAT score in my model. The model takes into account the interaction of GMAT, GPA, years of work experience, undergraduate major and the industry you worked in.

Ross Acceptance Rate by GPA
Next I looked at how GPA affects Ross acceptance rate. I’m sure it is not a surprised to hear that a higher GPA increases your chance of admissions at Michigan school of business. Image

Ross Acceptance Rate: GMAT vs. GPA
The real question is which is more important for raising your Ross acceptance rate, GPA or GMAT? In the graph below I compare how much the admissions rate changes if I alter the GMAT or GPA by a standard deviation. A standard deviation is a measure of variance in a population or sample. Since I can’t compare the absolute variance because GMAT and GPA are on different scales, I compare how the shift of one standard deviation impacts the Ross MBA acceptance rate.

Image
As you can see the slope is steeper for the GMAT line. This means that Ross prefers applicants with a high GMAT over applicants with a high GPA. One standard deviation higher in GMAT increases acceptance rate by 22% while a standard deviation in GPA only increases chances of admission by 14%.

Other Ross Acceptance Rate Insights
similar to Harvard and Wharton, at Michigan the acceptance rate is noticeably lower for Indian applicants vs. non-Indian applicants, 17% vs. 41% respectively. Engineering majors have a lower chance of admission while liberal arts majors have a higher chance. Many schools are trying to increase the number of women in their program. The higher acceptance rate for liberal arts majors may reflect Ross trying to attract more women, however my data set is missing gender information. More years of work experience increases the chance of admission by around 2.5% per year. Also military applicants have a higher chance of admissions.

Good luck with your applications!

Quick Question:

I received an email from Ross ADCOM this morning saying that I was missing one of my transcripts. I logged onto the application website to see exactly what I submitted and the only thing I can find is the "view form in HTML" tab, but that won't allow me to open specific attachments I added. When I open the application in that format I can only see that I added an attachment for that section and the name of the attachment....I can't actually open it and see what it contains.

When I go to the Education section I have a transcript listed for each school and the names of the attachments are correct as far as I can tell. Is anyone able to open or see the attachments they submitted with their application? I know some schools have a preview section that shows you everything, includinig attachments, in one document. I dont want to send the ADCOM something I've already submitted and their office is closed until Monday/Tuesday....thanks.

I dont see the harm in sending the Transcripts again. Email it to them and mention what you have said here (about not being sure what they can see). If you feel very guilty about sending them something that they already have, just tell them that you'd rather err on the side of being safe than being sorry (about them not receiving the transcripts).

Just be sure that the transcripts that you send by email are complete in every respect. - gmatbugsme84

The more I actually get into this process, the more mysterious it gets. I don't think ANYONE can claim to know exactly how it works. And to be honest, that frustrates me more than anything else. There is no way to say what will work and what will not. No 20 variables that can determine a probability. For an engineer, that is the most frustrating thing ever. :P
But crib all you want, this is the process. So you have to live with it and hope something clicks somewhere.
All the best everyone!

I think that there are a number of elements we can't control, and this is what's frustrating.
One thing that I believe is important is the story. Not how good are crafted your essays but what they tell. This is the element that I believe frustrates everyone, because it cannot be measured or quantified. There is no way to tell I have a 760 story, you have a 700 story so my story is definitely better. We try to simplify the process and compare GPA, GMAT and so on but this will never work.
Another key element out of the applicant's control are the other applicants. We may be awesome but the truth is that there is an insane competition, and we don't even know how the schools divide applicants in clusters, and who are our competitors in the process.

I only wish everyone the best. - ascar

Applicant | Interview Debrief

I just had my ross interview yesterday with a 2nd year student via Skype. I thought it might be helpful to others if I share my experience so here we go:
1. walk through your resume (I was cut off because apparently I was giving too much details)
2. significant accomplishments in your career
3. WHY questions
4. Short term/Long term goals (I didn't feel like I had enough time for this part)
5. how to motivate others when you're in a team
6. how to overcome difficulties when working in a team, there is no specification of "difficulties" so I used "resolving conflicts" as an example
7. question period

very traditional interview, very conservational and the interviewer was sharp yet approachable. I didn't feel like I did the best that I could but oh well. Maybe I really love Ross and really want to get in and therefore I was nervous for this one.

best luck to the rest of guys interviewing soon! - fengfenglee
