curious if anyone submitted in August has received an interview invite.

I submitted on August 7, according to the data points here if I can get an interview it should be this week.
Just a warning: There are few "shoulds" with the Columbia process in terms of timing of the steps. The variability is really wide. It's easy to get very stressed out in this process (one of the downsides of Columbia's rolling system - though the benefits outweigh it). There are common patterns but just be careful about tagging expectations for when you'll hear back onto what others have reported, it can drive you crazy.

Wanted to alert everyone to a recent very subtle change on the Columbia website: They are once again stating a clear preference for the GMAT over the GRE. See https://www8.gsb.columbia.edu/programs-admissions/mba/admissions/application-requirements#3

Columbia used to have a very restrictive policy on this (we ranted about it and other applicant-unfriendly rules last year), which has since been loosened (we'd like to believe that our rant contributed to some of those changes).

A few other schools also have a stated preference for GMAT over GRE. You won't be turned away just because you're submitting a GRE score but they do evaluate them slightly differently; see this post on the EssaySnark blahg to explain and this one about converting GRE -> GMAT. If you have not yet tested, might want to consider all this before proceeding.

If I submit the RD decision app right now, will there be no benefit as it will just be deferred until all ED decisions are rendered?

True. they won't start reading RD apps until December, so no point submitting right now; in fact it would scream that CBS is not your first choice - imagine telling a gal/guy that you are not my first choice, but I will still ask you out on a date :)

The website says "early December" and even that is earlier than they've ever done before. Used to be that RD didn't start reviews until January. Never heard of any RD apps seeing movement before middle December in past years.

Columbia is very reapplicant-friendly and the fact that you got the interview invite last year reinforces our point that the GRE instead of GMAT will never keep someone out. Hopefully you've tightened up your career goals this time (weak goals are one of the most common flaws we see in rejected Columbia apps) and if you're giving some evidence that you've improved your profile then it could totally work out for you - especially if you're applying in Early Decision. They prefer to see an ED app for reapplicants. Good luck, can't wait to hear about your CBS admit!! :-D

I did apply through ED this time, and I'm hoping for the best. After I was rejected last year, I found it difficult to pinpoint the areas of improvement... It was hard for me to judge whether my essays / goals were "strong" or "weak". Perhaps I should have had my goals evaluated by acquaintances before reapplying...

Hi all,

I'm looking for some quick feedback on my profile and thoughts on my odds.

-750 GMAT (49Q, 44V)
-5 years work experience at major market research firm. measuring tv and digital advertising effectiveness for large advertisers and media publishers. started as a regular analyst out of school and received three promotions, including 1 yr as a project manager (led integration of a multimillion $ acquisition) and now doing product management in the digital space.
-Upon graduation, I want to take a strategic/biz dev role at a digital media/advertising company to help drive their product and overall commercial strategy.
-3.68 GPA at a mediocre undergrad school, degree in general business with focus on economics. Note: I went to top 5 computer engineering school out of high school, did extremely poorly the first two semesters, steadily improved my grades, transferred out, studied business and finished with a strong GPA at the new school.
-not many extracurriculars - I am a big tech junkie and do tons of small things on the side like building computers for folks and hacking/modifying electronics

I plan to use my optional essay to talk about my education experience. I'm wondering if you think it is worth trying to use one my essays to talk about my passion for technology in order to address my lack of extracurriculars (perhaps the one about what I'd want others in my Cluster to know about me).

Any advice/thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Certainly not time to give up yet! Just keep your fingers crossed and keep working on your other apps (just in case).

I'm in the same situation. I didn't hear anything yet either (I submitted my application beg. of August = +/- one month).

Waiting is so frustratingggg!

Got my official ding today. 740(50q, 39v) GMAT, 7.5/10 gpa from a top 10 school in India and a master's gpa of 3.25 from a top 5 public school in US.
