i don't understand why comma use between
doorstep and astride.

is it a modifier?

Thx for your question. Is that the full sentence? It seems like it’s not a full sentence since it starts with a Dash and does not end with a period. Do you mind posting the full sentence or including all punctuation?

Hello, ahnhyunmin. I think I can help with this one. In the context of the sentence, the word astride, as strange as it sounds to this native American English speaker, is a preposition meaning something similar to spanning or extending along/across. The sentence after the comma, then, is nothing more than a lengthy prepositional phrase, one that adds additional information to the main clause that has already resolved.

What is the source of the sentence? Was it from an article on Hong Kong?

the dictionary meaning of astride is below.

astride : with a leg on each side of.
e.g.
"he was sitting astride the bike"

So I think the meaning is .. Something is on China’s doorstep . That doorstep includes each side of the trade routes along which oil and other raw materials are transported to China and finished goods are shipped out...

I believe the clause ',astride ....' is giving additional info on the China’s doorstep .

But anyway .. I second bb on the fact that it will be really helpful in getting the exact context if we have the full sentence .
