Hi All,
I am having a bit of a hard time in comparison questions. I understand the logical meaning of the sentence most of the times, and even if I mark/guess the correct answer choice, I feel as if there is more to it that what I understand correctly. I have read some expert posts, such as the one
e-GMAT posted re: ellipsis, and while that article is helpful and detailed, it uses pretty simple sentences as examples. I feel equally at unease in some questions that involve "that of" construction in comparisons as I end up relying more on my ear to guess the answer choice.
Below are some of the sentences on which I would love to get comments from experts on the "correctness" of these sentences.
Sentence group #1: I consider a-c correct. Option d sounds weird to me but not sure why it could be wrong. Comments?
1a. Company pledged to enforce greater fiscal discipline than originally promised
1b. Company pledged to enforce greater fiscal discipline than was originally promised
1c. Company pledged to enforce greater fiscal discipline than it originally promised
1d. Company pledged to enforce greater fiscal discipline that that was originally promised
Sentence group #2: I consider 2a incorrect. I think this is fairly straightforward
2a. Capital expenses of company A are greater than company B (illogical comparison of cap. expenses (of A) to company B)
2b. Capital expenses of company A are greater than those of company B
Sentence group #3: I consider a-d below correct. Is option A really ambiguous for GMAT purposes?
3a. Country A has greater number of people above 60 years of age than country B
(is "has" assumed to be present after country B?)
3b. Country A has greater number of people above 60 years of age than does country B
3c. Country A has greater number of people above 60 years of age than country B does
3d. Country A has greater number of people above 60 years of age than there are in country B
3e. Country A has greater number of people above 60 years of age than the people in country B (I believe this is illogically comparing number of people to people)
Sentence group #4: I think options A and B are correct. I believe option C is comparing country A's production to production of some un-named country - is that the correct way of thinking?
4a. In 2000, country A produced 20 million fewer potatoes than it did in 1990
4b. In 2000, country A produced 20 million fewer potatoes than in 1990 (can "it did" be presumed to be present?)
4c. In 2000, country A produced 20 million fewer potatoes than were produced in 1990
I really appreciate the help, and hope that these examples, along with others if folks wish to include, will be helpful in clearing lot of issues with comparison and omission questions.
Thanks,
