Hi,

Since this is my first post, GmatClub is not allowing me to paste the link. Please look up the link to the article by using the quoted sentence. The first link that comes up is the link to the article.

" It is a profoundly anti-democratic statute whose wanton misuse the Supreme Court’s repeated assertion that sedition subsists only in the case of an explicit provocation of proximate violence has failed to curb. "

In India, the charge of sedition is used against people for drawing cartoons, for criticising those in power, to label student protesters as anti-nationals and to nab tribal rights activists and deny them bail.

I find a lot of errors in this sentence.
It(Charge of sedition)
is a profoundly(adverb)
anti-democratic(Adjective)
statute(Noun) whose wanton(adj) misuse(Subject for next has)
the Supreme Court’s repeated assertion that sedition subsists only in the case of an explicit provocation of proximate violence those should be enclsoed with commas as this part is acting as a modifier.
has failed to curb.

Hope this helps DivyaKnows

I would suggest to start reading The Economist

I have read on many posts on gmatclub that the standard of the gmat RC and english matches to the standard of The Economist

This will help to improve RC as well.

Award kudos of helpful.

Could you please help post a version of the sentence that you think is right.

Thanks !

Hi Divya, some statute (law) is being referred to here. The "Economic Times" is criticizing this statute, stating that this statute is anti-democratic.

The newspaper further states that this statute is being misused extensively, despite Supreme Court’s repeated assertion.

What assertion? Well, Supreme Court has been repeatedly stating that sedition subsists only in the case of an explicit provocation of proximate violence.
