in A] 'evolved' seems an ed verbal

Are you looking at the correct problem? You mentioned answer choice A, but "evolved" isn't affected by the answer choices (because it lies outside the underline).

In this problem, "evolved" is a VERB. Its subject is "emotions". (Emotions evolved to help animals survive in hostile environments and reproduce.)

Quote:

if I ask - 'what (are) evolved in the nervous system?
v/s
what evolved in the nervous system? - does not make sense ?

"Evolve" can be a verb with or without an object—just like "develop".

E.g.,
• you can develop an emotional attachment to someone (with object)
• a conflict can develop between two opposing parties (without object)

Similarly,
• Humans evolved opposable thumbs about two and a half million years ago. (with object)
• Modern humans evolved about 300,000 years ago. (without object)
