I chose C, because I did not notice the words "as contrary to the author's argument".

A and B are wrong because of the word "erroneously" so the author does not accept it as true.

E is wrong because second is not the author's point, but just evidence to support that point.

I thought that D is wrong because First is not evidence, but a belief (or opinion). The second is not additional, but the only evidence to support author's conclusion.

Nevertheless, since C is wrong, D is the only option, not the best one IMO.

"as contrary to the author's argument"

That would make (c) wrong. The second bold is in the section that goes more along with what the author is arguing for. Not against.

It's contrary to the first point, but not contrary to what the author is trying to say.

e) The first is a claim that the author believes to be invalid; the second is the author’s main

I went with D because of the second part of the boldface but can please someone explain to me how the first boldface is an Evidence?
"Scientists believed that...". I mean people can believe anything the want to, there is no clear evidence that this is established.
Is it that we chose D because it is the only one with a correct second bf?

The first is also a kind of evidence that the physiologists erroneously believed in - which the author refutes/disagrees with most certainly.
