![]() I. Courses ![]() Business Ethics - Richard Powers I already talked about how awesome this class was. Now, let's come to the beneficial things for the students. Nobody gets A+ on this subject. There were papers submitted and be sure to really do well on these papers. They tend to give you really low scores on these papers, so work hard on them. Spend more time on doing the models and the reflection part of the paper rather than the case part. We also had to do a presentation for a case and we completely forgot that we were being captured on video. Most of the rooms have built-in motion sensor cams that (guess what) detects the motion of the speaker and follows it to capture the camera. We were able to see how we performed in this presentation and the Maja from SDL helped us improve ourselves by giving valuable tips. One quick tip is that if one is presenting and you four people are standing at the back, don't move too much, or else, the camera will capture you instead of the person speaking. Model-based Decision Making - Professor Matt Mitchell ![]() Yep, that's our professor for model-based (who gave us lots of difficult problems to work on), standing on the table; he's like a rockstar! ?#section5 This subject drove us crazy. If you are from engineering, or any other math-related background, you'll find this manageable. We learned about game theory, Nash equilibrium, option values, decision trees, and Monty Hall problem. The homeworks in this course were insane if you haven't encountered them. No class participation points required. As for the grades, I was really shocked to have this subject as my highest grade in the grade report even though I was so sure that it's my weakness. Perhaps, I was so scared of this course that I took more time in studying for the finals. ![]() These are some types of problems that we tackled. In our group meetings, I was really amazed at my groupmates who knew how to tackle them immediately. MBA Tip: The classes were recorded and posted on RWorld, so you can always review them if you don't understand some sessions especially because Professor Matt talked really, really fast. Pre-MBA Tip: Master probabilities! Make sure to know how to do probability tables and master independent and mutually exclusive events. ![]() MBA Tip: Scholar sessions were really beneficial for this course if you start to become lost in the subject matter. They usually conduct one lesson twice. I attended both sessions for the probability lessons because I was so confused at that time. In the first session, it was really confusing, the scholars were slightly contradicting each other. Everyone went home confused. Thus, I attended the next morning, and the scholars presented them crystal clear. All the "fresh" students in that session did not complain at all. And a big "Thank you!" to Pravin as well who helped me in the three subjects while I was reviewing for the exams. Pravin is an accounting and economics scholar, who almost accepted being a Finance scholar as well. Very intelligent guy! Integrating Models and Data - Professor Bernardo Blum ![]() Scholar Sessions for Integrating This subject involved 2 group homeworks that involved data analysis. No book was required and the professor just gave us up-to-date readings. We learned things about data variation, regression, experiments, correlation and causation, which will all be useful in the upcoming subjects. I think this course was the most manageable compared to the other two subjects. No class participation points required. ![]() In the last few days of the term, we had this Models Day, in which we merged our learnings from Integrating and Model-based. They presented the problem of Ebay regarding the very few negative comments that appear on the seller's pages. That day was divided into two deliverables. First, we dissected the problem thru the use of decision trees. Both professors came to check in whether we're doing fine. In the latter part of the day, they gave us an Excel Data, in which we can start finding more insights that we can use to prove our reasoning. Managerial Economics - Professor Heski Bar-Isaac ![]() I'll start with the Pre-MBA Tip here: Read Managerial Economics by Baye while waiting for the approval of your visa and flight! MASTER the concepts. The exam and quiz were extremely tricky. Reading the book beforehand will give you time to be alive during the Foundations Term while you are doing all the adjustments. I had a lot of days, in which I only spent 4 - 6 hours of sleep, due to the number of homeworks, readings, socialization, events, kick-offs, and career events all in one month! Hence, getting this out of the way will really help you stay sane. Professor Heski Bar-Isaac gave a lot of practice questions. We had one quiz and one final exams. Our quiz was really tricky, but I heard from other sections that their professor gave them a relatively easy quiz but gave them an insane final exam. Our section ended up becoming grateful to have a hard quiz that motivated us to prepare really hard for the final exam. No class participation points required. The scholar sessions mostly covered basic economics and practice problems, but the scholars were really approachable when you don't understand some concepts and problems. ![]() AFTER THE EXAM!!! 3 sections conducted their exams in the Desautel Hall. As I was going out, everyone was smiling happily even though some exams were hard. Most of the people don't discuss their answers because, YEAH, don't stress yourself too much and you can't change anything at that point. THE NIGHTMARE IS FINALLY OVER. ![]() ![]() ![]() II. Extracurricular Activities Clubs ![]() There are a lot of clubs that you can choose from, but you have to pay additional bucks to join each of them. The major ones, including MCA, RFA, RMA, and BDC, cost 100-125 bucks for two years. Others costs around $70, while the social clubs typically cost $25. ![]() MCA Networking Event was really efficient. We sat in groups and the key people just rotate around. It was really organized and I really liked the efficiency compared to the typical networking event set-ups. Clubs I joined to and reasons behind them Management Consulting Association - I think it's a must to join this organization. So far, based on the events I attended, they have the most efficient and most effective programs. They also help you in the case prep/case interview that are usually encountered by those pursuing consulting. However, this kind of interview is growing and growing among companies, so it would be really beneficial for you to be ready in facing this kind of interview. Business Design Club - Most of the people I know are joining this exciting club as well. I really want to specialize in business design thinking for MBA and so far, I love the events I've attended to. (More about this in the upcoming Term 1 post) Rotman Business Analytics Club - Can't deny that analytics is extremely important in the business world. Some people thought that you have to do heavy data coding if you want to join this, so I asked the representative about this and she gave the opposite answer. So definitely join and don't hinder your lack and fear of coding. Rotman Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Association - My long-term goal has always been building my own start-up and turn it into a multinational corporation. Rotman Operations Management Association - Since I want a corporation, we can't deny that a good understanding of how operations work is a must. In this club, I heard they also offer you great discount for getting a Six Sigma certificate after you complete certain requirements. I'm not sure on the details, but I will definitely write about this once I learn more. Women in Management Association - We can't deny that gender biases are still happening in a lot of companies. To counter this, this organization really helps women find better job opportunities and helps equip them to be ready for action. One example I heard before is that they taught women how to play golf! I really appreciate the value of learning this as a woman because I had some boss before who plays it with his co-CEOs. and lastly..... Rotman Marketing Association - Okay, I didn't exactly join this during the club deadline. I came from a marketing background and I don't have much more budget for all these clubs, though they are all really good. However, my friend and I really wanted to join the Kraft case competition, and guess what?? They don't allow people to join it if they are not a member! Sneaky marketers! (And it worked on us. haha) However, other case competitions would allow non-member as long as they pay $5-20. So yeah, I'm back here and thinking of my marketing profession possibilities again. Overall, I spent around $500 just for 7 clubs while others joined 10-13 clubs. Company Office Visits In the Foundations Term, we were able to visit the office of BCG (Boston Consulting Group) and McKinsey. It was thru the effort of both WIMA and MCA that we got to socialize and visit McKinsey. Its office is really great as you can see in the picture! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Case Competition ![]() Case competitions started the week before our final exams. Everyone was extremely busy managing all these things, in addition to the extremely hard final exams that we had. It was also the time to find a good mix of people for your case competition. I would recommend you guys to ask about the upper years about their experience in these competitions, so you would have an idea on how to manage your schedule and what case competitions are relevant to you. Also, pick your battle. Don't join all of the case competition if you can't perform at your best. You're probably wasting your precious time that you can use to study and increase your GPA. And think about your groupmates' sake, these people really want to win this, so it would be unfair if you don't give out your best. Section Reps ![]() We have 5 available positions per section: 1 Academic Rep, 2 Social Reps, 1 Career Rep and 1 Outreach Rep. You have to make a one-minute speech to convince people to vote for you! Some people chose to just speak while others created their rap for this! Show your creativity! Club Reps In addition, you get to run as a club rep for the clubs you joined to (obviously). Only those people in your section who joined these clubs get to vote for you. You don't need to do any speech but you have to make a short "essay" or blurb. Join as many as you want to. Kickoffs ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pros: You get to socialize and know your club executives. This is good to know more about them and the club. If you plan to run for exec, definitely join this. This is also where you learn who else in the batch is joining this. Cons: But if you have no time for everything, I really think you could skip attending them, especially if you attended the club fair, in which they give you almost the same information. (Let's see what will happen in the coming years.) III. My Social Life Core Friends ![]() ![]() In my first month, I found myself lonely because I was still adjusting and I started to become homesick and missed everyone from my country. However, last term, I finally made my core friends, who are also my study buddies. It was really helpful to have a core study team because you really can't know everything. Sometimes I help them in some things I know, but they mostly help me in a lot of concepts and problems I don't understand easily. So thank you everyone. Karaoke "Club" ![]() Rotman Karaoke "Club" Amazing night full of amazing singers and rap-readers!! Okay, so I really like Karaoke! I almost always do it when I go to different countries. Last term, Susan and I went to Karaoke on our second week, right before our Economics quiz. Yes, it was only the two of us who went there!! That's how much we love Karaoke! We went to Jayugonggan, which has a relatively cheap price compared to the other Karaoke, but the songs were not really up-to-date. In my second Karaoke (in the picture), I was able to invite my fellow Karaoke lovers!! We went to Bar-plus that is more expensive, but it had up-to-date songs, which I really like! It was so much fun hearing the amazing voices of my classmates. Some were really born to be performers! Thanksgiving Dinner - 5-day Break ![]() This is my BFF, Susie Shi, enjoying Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii during the break! ![]() We had a break for 5 days and celebrated Thanksgiving with some of my batch. However, I did not really feel the break because I started investing my time on the readings for the upcoming term because I learned my lesson last Foundations Term. I cooked Filipino Chicken Adobo for these people. I hoped they liked it! We played Wolf, AKA Mafia. I had a bad day before coming to this dinner, but these people really helped me lighten up. Enjoyed their company so much! Apps we've been using https://gmatclub.com/chat - We've been using https://gmatclub.com/chat for the whole group because it's the only chat app that we know that can accommodate 350 people. Whatsapp, so far, doesn't allow this. Whatsapp - Almost all of the Rotman groupchats I have are in Whatsapp, so if you are starting one to connect with people, make one here, so you don't have to continuously switch apps. Facebook - We just use the Facebook group for posting pictures for our batch and posting important announcements and events. RWorld and RCareer - Most of the events are posted on Rworld, but be aware that there are also events in RCareer that you should check out. Note that you should only sign up if you are sure that you can come because there will be consequences if you are late or if you don't show up. ![]() Term 1 in one picture. It's Term 1 right now, and we are all having trouble finding time to do everything. More on this later! Rotman application is ongoing and I hope all the best to you guys!
