Congrats on your profile!
Round 3 is tough as you know but awesome to see you are getting interviews and invites - that's talking about your profile. Your Undergrad GPA is fantastic and if your UG university was strong, I think you won't need to bother with the GMAT.

Are you a sponsored candidate? If so, you want to make sure to indicate that if you have not yet.

P.S. Wow - skydiving!

Thanks BB!

Yeah, round 3 is a stretch but I remain optimistic.

Duly noted. I am confident I will receive partial sponsorship from my company which I'll make sure to mention in my application material

Haha, yes sir. Skydive Arizona is where it's at

Hi NathanMasky
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your profile looks good on the surface. Six years in manufacturing, coupled with a strong GPA and those "20 Under 30" nominations, would definitely catch the eye of the adcoms. It's impressive how you've woven in leadership through projects and your community involvement is commendable too.

However, while your background speaks to technical expertise, how will you articulate your business acumen and leadership vision in your application, especially for programs like Haas?

Hi! You have a very impressive profile. It seems like you’re either sponsored or have a solid fallback option. Your choice of schools is a bit intriguing (ranging from Broad to GSB), so I’m guessing you’re targeting programs with a strong operations focus since you plan to stay in the industry. Given your safety net, if I were in your position, I’d aim to maximize my odds at the top business schools. In the long run, pedigree can significantly influence your network leverage.

Hello, I am currently working in Oil & Gas sector in an Indian NOC, as an exploration geoscientist. My job is to mainly find out new subsurface oil & gas pools, subsurface modelling and mapping. As I am quite familiar with how to find out new oil & gas resources, mineral resources etc., I would love to shift to energy consultancy, as the current energy scenario is changing fast in our country.

You seem to have a great profile - great score! However, something didn’t work out.... Is it the gaps that the universities did not like? It’s definitely something the United States business school would have a lot of questions about but I think it’s more common in India?

Item that I feel is a detriment on the profile is multiple breaks and I would highly recommend submitting a separate essay just to address those.

One other aspect I learned about is the public/government arm of the MBB consulting firms is very small and competitive. I’ve heard consultants mention multiple times not to put the public arm as the goal patient. I think Ed‘s tech or some other space may be more logical and reasonable and will make them more aligned and coherent story. You don’t want schools to wonder if you change your mind every few years and decide to do something else. They are always on the lookout for folks who dabble in too many things. Also you want to demonstrate leadership and initiative in your candidacy to demonstrate that you’ve gone above and beyond with your peers at work have done.

Thank you for your suggestions, bb!

Yes, the study breaks esp. for Indian Civil Services and other govt. job exams are quite common in India. And, unfortunately, my consultants never advised me against putting MBB public practice as my post-MBA goal. So, ya, that could be one reason.

EdTech is also a good logical post-MBA goal and is of course aligned with my current role, though I never thought of using it in my MBA essay story. Thank you so much for your suggestion.

Maybe I lack this kind of self-introspection capability and nor I could find a consultant who could help me uncover those layers. I'll definitely use your advice for next application cycle. And this time I will also have the advantage of R1 with my GMAT score already in place. So, higher likelihood of interviews and acceptance.

Its somewhat surprising that you did not get interviews at these bschools. I am in sync with BB's analysis - too many career breaks and a low GPA can put a question on your seriousness. That said, i have come across several applicants and also personally helped a few(successfully) who took a career break to study for IAS. I'd be happy to look at your ISB and IIM applications and offer any advice that can help you (no charges).
What BB has mentioned about career goals in MBB - Govt practice is also true- especially for an international applicant applying to the US. When you wrote this goal for Indian b-schools, I hope you explored its viability by talking to people working at these firms. Even if you are writing names of edtech firms you will have to mention what part of business will you work in and also ensure that they recruit from your target the b-school and hire international students.

Thank you for offering the help, Namita. I can surely share my IIM-Ahmedabad and ISB apps/LORs/CV with you to evaluate. Let me know where I can mail them.

And yes, I explored the viability of my career goal in MBB public practice as, being in the govt., I am surrounded by consultants from Big4 in public practice, and senior govt. officials who know people in MBBs. So, I was sure that I have a network already to leverage post-MBA to get an entry into MBB public practice. But probably I was not able to convince these schools about my post-MBA career planning.

The silver lining is that you can reapply to these b-schools if you want to study and live in India. You can also apply to b-schools abroad - most of them value applicants with social impact experience.

Shubham:
Try drawing a line from your past, starting from completion of UG all the way till today and into the future, including and post-MBA. Based on this line, try answering the question: What are you brilliant at today?
Do you have a convincing answer?
This is what b-schools and future recruiters would want to see. This is what will sell your profile to MBBs and others. MBA education in itself is not a magic wand. Your past will come along with you.

Wow. Super interesting and unique profile!

Your scores are also very unorthodox for a profile like that.

Traditionally, schools are reluctant to take in older applicants but they constantly make exceptions and I think this is a great profile to bring the rules 💪

Good luck with apps!
Have you considered M.Sx program at Stanford? It’s geared to more experienced candidates but it doesn’t have a summer internship and does not leverage traditional recruiting.

Have you connected with any of the alums or current students to figure out how to strengthen your candidacy for consulting recruiting?

6 years in Energy industry in North America in a technical role. Looking to switch to move to europe within energy industry (move into management, finance, M&A role), feel that MBA will help me gain the required skill set and sort of boost my overall profile. Long term target is to work in investment compay or financial/consulting company with energy focus.

Targeting 675 GMAT FE. Bagpacked last 2 years in SE asia while maintaing full time job remotely (not sure if I should inlcude this in my application essays).

Will likely quit before the application phase and get a part time financial analyst job in my home country (India) with the aim to make the career transition into finance. (Will this hurt my overall profile?)

Hi 2monthprep
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, I see a decent GPA and when combined with your background in renewables makes your profile interesting. Targeting top European programs with a focus on energy finance looks ambitious, thus you will have to present a very strong profile. Plus, six years of technical experience might have provided you with a solid foundation.

Whether or not to include your backpacking experience is a matter of detailed discussion. It could showcase adaptability and global perspective, but it needs to be framed correctly to avoid appearing as though you were less focused on your career. The part-time financial analyst role in India is a smart move, signaling your commitment to the finance track.

A 675 GMAT FE target is competitive but exceeding it will significantly strengthen your profile further. I would recommend that you highlight some of the key challenges you faced in your technical role, and how did you overcome them.

Hey, sorry for the late reply. I’ve decided to go with Haas and take the scholarship. It was a tough decision, but I’m really excited about the chance to live in the Bay Area and focus on tech recruiting.

My Short term post MBA goal is to go into consulting industry and in long term move into public policy formulation

I have an experience of 10 years in Oil & Gas industry [Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd] 4 years as a Maintenance Engineer and 6 years in Procurement & Inventory management. I have received 3 promotions in a span of 10 years. I am the first female employee to have handled refinery maintenance jobs at my location and yet received Outstanding achievement award.

I have prepared for UPSC exam for 3 years, reached the interview stage but could not qualify.

Notable academic achievements
All India rank 48 in GATE exam

Extra cirriculars
As a team of 4 people, we conducted free GATE coaching classes to economically challenged people of my college for a period of 3 years.

I was actively involved in CSR project of my company for a period of 1 year - identifying beneficiaries and finalising the methodology of support

While in HPCL I have hosted an international refiners conference for which I have received an appreciation letter from Executive Director. My public speaking skills were well appreciated and I was given chance to host 4 major events of HPCL.

Looking for M7 colleges in US

You have good strong profile and score. The tenured career of 10 years and lack of client facing roles could be a slight challenge to enter consulting. It all depends on how you position and package your candidature. - Dee (admissions consultant).

I have handled vendor management activities for the entire refinery as a single point contact for 9000 plus vendors. I see to make up for the client interaction with this aspect of my job

One mantra I suggest to all my candidates is 'never fall in love with your own CV'. The relationship with a vendor versus a client is very different. To a vendor, you are / were the customer; as a consultant, you will be the vendor. Anyways, I am only trying to share some insights, since besides being an MBA admissions consultant, I have also been a management consultant for past almost two decades.

Hey, I saw that you applied to school with a waiver. I am a professional with 10 years of work experience in the financial research domain. Could you please let me know what all schools you applied for? I applied for R2 and still haven't received any calls from most of the schools. Kindly help. Thanks.

Hi there, I applied R1 for UNC, Questrom and Rice with waivers. Rejected without interview at UNC. Accepted to Rice and Questrom with scholarships. My experience is not too mainstream- Architecture and then capital works construction management in India and New Zealand. My essays were strong i believe. R1 probably gave me the edge as well.

I didn’t hire an admissions consultant. I have done very little research on MBA admissions, but from what I can see, they are looking for diversity as well as a fit within their programme. I shaped my CV and essays to showcase this. And didn’t aim too high. I was planning on giving GMAT and applying for better schools in R2. But it is a lot of work and I am happy with Rice. Good luck with your applications, surely something will work out.

Hello Chandra KK,
Can you share what went wrong with your LBS, Judge, Said Applications? Don't see a reason for your not getting through.
User avatar

14 Mar 2024, 20:46
I think the major reason is being in the over represented pool of Indian Male Engineers.

I was expecting to get through LBS. The essays were good and I also had recommendation from Alumni. The only thing I could think of was my work experience. I will be having 9 yrs of Workex by the time I join vs LBS avg of 5.4. I head LBS generally dont look for 8+ unless the profile is special.

For Oxford & Cambridge, I dont understand even till today what went wrong. They were my backup schools and they surprised me. From GMAT club, I understood that tot many Indian males got through in Jan round for both schools. May be they have taken more in earlier rounds.

Sorry! 😞
If you’re planning to reapply, I would highly encourage reaching out to current students and even the recently admitted folks, and asking them for recommendations to improve your profile and asking them small things such as review your career goals. I wouldn’t send them 10 essays and your résumé because that’s overwhelming but I was asking for some small things And see if you can peel back the onion and get a sense what may have gone wrong. I also would seek out applicants with similar amount of experience to compare cards and see what worked for them and what caliber of folks was getting admitted … This will be very helpful for your future applications and not only for diagnosing and troubleshooting

PS. I’m sorry, not a whole lot of other wisdom to share at the moment. don’t let it get to you.

Thank you..

It is not all so gloomy :-). Though LBS was disappointing, results from my other target schools are good so far.

I got call on IESE admit. I am waiting for official admissions letter to update.
I did HEC also well. Expect to get through. Waiting for the result.
I felt I submitted a strong app for INSEAD too.

May be like you said, initial results helped me to reflect and revise my essays & application.

I have 8+ years of work experience. I am in a similar boat. Did you take help of some consultant with your applications. If yes, can you suggest some. Also, which colleges should I target, by the time I apply my experience will be 9 years.
Thanks!

Likely EU schools. as US programs tend to be a bit picker with older applicants but you can always apply if you have time. Make sure you have a good enough score to bring to the table. 720 was higher than the average for pretty much all of these programs.

Hi Hasmeet,

Thank you!

My understanding from the MBA process is that you need to have some of the following to make a good application and stand out especially applying from over represented India region - a. Good GMAT/GRE score b. Demonstrated leadership at work c. International Exposure, working in diverse cultures d. Extra-Curricular actitives i.e life outside work. A consultant will help you to refine your stories and essays to make the application stronger only if you have those. So, I would suggest to review if above are ready when you start looking for a consultant. Also, shortlisting your dream schools will also help to work with appropriate consultant as each one has certain schools as their strengths.

Yes, I have worked with a consultant. Please PM me for the details.

College shortlisting depends on what you plan to do after MBA, post- MBA work location, your finances, school strengths and weakness.
