Hi y'all! I'm a 2020 deferred admit for a M7 program who will be matriculating this summer.
-------------
tldr:
Leveraged my deferred admission to try-out another industry during my defermentt period. The role wasn't a good fit and I didn't pass the probation period. This also led to a 4 month unemployment gap.
I'm now wondering how I can address this professionally in the background check?
-------------
I am concerned how should I address my employment history during the admission background check as I did not pass a probation period with an employer.
I'm a mechanical engineer, so my first job out of undergrad was a contractor role with a big oil company (Exxon, Shell, BP, etc). This was great but I wanted to leverage my deferred admission to explore other industries.
After only 9 months in that role, I accepted an operator role at a startup incubator. I was super keen to explore this space as entrepreneurship, Venture Capital, and early-stage operator were all paths I was contemplating recruiting for post MBA.
However, the role itself wasn't what I expected and I really didn't enjoy it from week 1 (it just wasn't stimulating enough compared to prior engineering roles). I tried to tough it out but obviously my enthusiasm reflected in my work and it was agreed at the end of the six month probation period that I wasn't a good fit.
This all happened at the end of the 2021. The month after I got married, then came Thanksgiving & Christmas, so I didn't accept an offer and start a new role until 4 months after.
The new role however is amazing! I'm back in the oil & gas industry (Exxon, Shell, BP, etc) working on some exciting projects. At the time of matriculation, I would have been at this company for 2.5 years.
But, I'm wondering how I can explain this situation (and employment gap) if it gets flagged in the background check. Will a reason for ending employment be requested? Do I simply say that getting the deferred admission allowed me to explore other industries, and this was all a learning experience? Should I be more concerned about the 4 month gap?
In the annual check-ins with adcom, I simply said the role wasn't for me so I found something else after I took some time off over Thanksgiving and Christmas.
