i think the "before" part might work, since it could make logical sense. if you listen to music that stimulates your thoughts and focus before you start studying, you will get condition to it. therefore if you listen to music right before you take your test, it could do the same.

but i have to say that all n all, if you can find a way to calm your nerves before the test, you will definitely do better. remember one thing: one reason that most of people don't do as well on the actual test compare to the diagnostics they take is the test day anxiety and stress. these two factors will diminish your focus and cause you to fall for the tricky traps that the test makers make in the answer choices. so being calm = better score

i think in order for the retention to be associated with the memorization the activity needs to be done whilst hearing the music, but you would have to hear the music during the test to recall it, not a good way to set up a study ;p
