Hi Everyone,
I took the GMAT for the first time yesterday and something happened to me that was unexpected/really threw me off. I figured I would share with the forum to get your thought and so others don't make the same mistake.
After completing the IR section I accepted on the computer to take my break, raised my hand, and then went to the bathroom. I planned on going back to my cubicle to sit for the remaining 6 minutes of my break, to get mentally focused and to set up my scratch paper for the Quant section - but when I returned to the testing room the proctor escorted me back to my seat (which I believe is customary) and then he clicked through my exam, immediately starting my quant section. I had a minor freak out mentally when this happened - I couldn't ask the proctor what was going on because I was in the exam room but when I talked to him afterwards he said that once you return to your testing cubicle after a break your exam starts immediately. For 2-3 questions all I could think about was "what the hell just happened...this just totally messed me up."
Is this the rule that when you return to your computer during a break your break ends and your exam starts immediately?? I read through the GMAT Administration rules again and I don't see any mention of this. Was my proctor in the wrong or should I have known better

You can't take any part of a break inside the testing room. Please refer to The GMAT Examination Testing Rules Agreement:

Beyond the 'cautionary tale' that your situation represents, I'm more interested in the broader outcome and how you studied:
1) How did you score (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
2) What was/is your goal score?
3) Are you planning to retake the GMAT?
4) When you took your practice CATs, what did you do during the two 8-minute breaks? I ask because after working on a computer for an hour (or so), sitting still in front of that same computer isn't really much of a 'strategic break.'

- I should have read the rules more carefully ahead of time) I think I did well and am grateful for my score.
