During a particular trip, how much time had elapsed once 90% of the total distance of the trip had been traveled?

to find how time elapsed to cover 90% of distance we need

time taken (to cover 90% of distance) = \(\frac{total distance}{speed at which the distance is covered}\)

STATEMENT (1)---- The total distance of the trip was 40 miles and the total time elapsed was exactly 4 hours.
total distance = 40 miles
total time taken to cover total distance = 4 hours
speed of traveling = \(\frac{40}{4}\) = 10 miles/hr

90% of distance = 40*\(\frac{90}{100}\) = 36

time taken to cover 90% of the distance = \(\frac{36}{10}\)
SUFFICIENT

STATEMENT (2) The average speed of the trip was exactly 10 miles per hour.
we don't know the total distance hence we don't know what 90% of the distance is
so we cant find the time
INSUFFICIENT

A is the answer

Answer has to be option E. No where it is mentioned that travelling is done at constant speed.

Analyzing the question:
The important thing to note here is there is no mention of "constant speed". So the first 90% of the trip could have been at a speed of 200 mph and the remaining 10% at 20mph.

Statement 1 and 2 are nearly the same information, they don't talk about the speed in between the 4 hours so both are insufficient.
