Can someone please explain the usage of "that" and not using "that". I'm still confused as to where to use that and where to not. I know there are other differentiators in the options as well, but why that?

Okay so "That" mostly acts as a connector. In this case, Educator Maria Montessori believed in something.
So the question here is what was it that she believed? So with the help of 'that' we are able to get the critical information of the sentence.
It is basically the subject of the clause.

In the other case, when you are using a word to refer to an action rather than a clause , then the use of 'that' would be incorrect.
Example : "The goalkeeper blocked two penalty kicks in the second half, that caused his team to win" is incorrect.
The correct sentence would be : The goalkeeper blocked two penalty kicks in the second half, causing his team to win the game

Experts please help why "Should " is correct.
I have read never use Should in subjunctive construction. Is there any gap in my understanding???
Please help

should can be used in subjuctive in british english and some grammar book agree with this use.
I have required that you should learn today

but in american english and on gmat land, a different or higher standard is required

I have required that you learn today

we dont need to know the reason for this use but it is possible that meaning of subjunctive/order is expressed by "required" and the "should" becomes redundant.

Educator Maria Montessori believed that students be allowed to choose from among a number of different lessons designed for the encouragement of their development as thinkers and creators with individual learning and thinking styles.

A) that students be allowed to choose from among a number of different lessons designed for the encouragement of
(1) “believe” isn’t a bossy verb – can’t use the command subjunctive

B) that students be allowed to choose between a number of different lessons designed to encourage
(1) between incorrect for more than two items; (2) “believe” isn’t a bossy verb – can’t use the command subjunctive

C) that students should be allowed to choose among a number of different lessons designed to encourage
Best option

D) in allowing students to choose from among a number of different lessons were designed for encouraging
(1) ungrammatical and bizarre phrasing – “…choose from among a number of different lessons were designed for…”

E) in allowing students to choose between a number of different lessons designed for the encouragement of
(1) between incorrect for more than two items

Can anyone help me understand why we need "should" in front of "be allowed"?

I am confused that we do not use "should" especially in cases as follows.
ex) it is important that a student always be humble in the preparation of MBA
ex) it is imperative that Jane take care of her health
ex) Officers spoke on condition that they not be named in the press

I thought it would be the same in this question and thought omitting "should" is better than using.
I am confused when we need "should" inside a sentence and when we omit it.

Hello celan,

To answer your query, the use of "should" is not redundant here because "believed" is not a subjunctive mood trigger; the context here is of one person’s belief and thus, the context is not authoritative/imaginative/contrary-to-fact and thus, subjunctive mood is not ideal here.

Context!

  • If Tim demands that his children be quiet, he's giving an order, not expressing a hypothetical belief about the world.
  • But if Tim believes that his children should be quiet, well, there's no order or command. Now he's thinking about the way the world should, or ought to, be.
  • In the OA, we are talking about what Maria believed at that time, not something she was demanding to happen later.

And if you're uncomfortable using this as a decision point, we have a couple other clues to help us eliminate (A) and (B)...

In (B), the "between" makes it sound like there are only two options, and that doesn't make any sense.

In (A), the "from" (in "from among") seems completely unnecessary. Why not just use "among"? Also, the noun "encouragement" is a problem:

  • We tend to use "encouragement " when we are talking about giving someone support. For example: "Tim needed lots of encouragement (support) to finish cleaning the bathroom."
  • "encouragement of their development" makes it sound like the lessons are designed to give support to their development (as if the lessons are cheering their development on?), and that's not quite right.
  • "to encourage" avoids that issue and is also simpler and more concise.

(A) and (B) each have a couple of issues, and (C) is our winner.
