Eight friends met for lunch at an expensive restaurant, and everyone decided to contribute equally to the total bill of $480. If one of the friends had a coupon for 25% off the total bill, and if each friend still contributed equally after the coupon was applied to the bill, how much did each friend pay?
A. $90
B. $70
C. $45
D. $37
E. $35
Kudos for a correct solution. The wording in this question is a bit off; anyways, this question is asks how much eight friends will have to pay for a $480.00 if a 25 discount is applied to it l with the condition that all eight friends must pay equal amounts. We can use algebra to solve this question
$480(3/4) / 8 = x (why 3/4? If you have... say 100 dollars and you have a 25 percent discount then you could represent it algebraically as $100- $100(.25)- however this not the most concicse- if we take the opposite of .25 ".75" and multiply it by 100 dollars then we have the same amount as if we did that formula. Moreover, I converted .75 to 3/4 because multiplying by 75 is too time consuming for the GMAT).
