I must say that This question is crap. In the official explanation, it is stated for option C that participial phrase allowing is ambiguous. We know that comma + which either show cause and effect relationship or it can modify that subject of previous clause. In this particular question allowing is perfectly modifying the theory of relativity.

I could argue in option B the usage of 'It' is ambiguous. It can refer back to century also

Agreed.. I am not really satisfied with the explanation for choosing ans B over C.

The justification provided for rejecting the option "C " is not sufficient.
If we go by meaning, option C is describing clearly that theory is allowing the scientist to explore the possibility.

Meaning of the original sentence is also stating the same that this theory allows the scientists for doing something and moreover 2nd clause do not provide the reason- Why does this theory is gateway of innovations?"

@Daag

Can you help us to understand please?

I completely agree with above 3 users. In fact, I don't see an effective reason to cancel out any of options a, b, & c.
Too formal is the reason against option A? Such explanations, even though official, don't help and confuse us more.
"it" doesn't have an ambiguous antecedent. However, option B & C conveniently accept and ignore its existence as needed.

Requesting someone to look into this.
or else drop the question. What's the point of keeping a question, if we are not learning anything from it.
