Why option B can be the answer? IMO B has to be the ans

Option B changes the meaning by changing the verb tense unnecessarily. Though it may not be wrong, but when two grammatically correct choices are present, we should go with the original sentence so as to convey the exact intended meaning.

What is the source of this question? (Manhattan Prep, Magoosh, Official Guide, Etc.)
It's not structured like any sentence correction question I've seen before...

Either the girls or the boys are the winners; we'll have to check the results to be sure.

POE:
Eliminate (D) & (E) - Subject is plural. So, we need a plural verb 'are'
Eliminate (B) - changes the meaning.
(A) is more clear and parallel. Eliminate (C)

a. Either the girls or the boys are the winners ; - CORRECT

b. Either the girls or the boys will be the winners ;

c. Either girls or boys are the winners ;

d. Either the girls or the boys is the winner ;

e. Either the girls or the boys is the winners ;

The result is out. Either the girls or the boys are winners. Whatever competition occurred between them, one of them have already won. Author just don't know who won. Hence A. Whereas in B, future tense is used. Means result is still not declared. If result is not declared, how author will check the result??. Thats why B is wrong. Illogical. C is generalizing boys and girls. Original sentence is talking about particular set of boys and girls. Hence C is wrong. For D & E, SV error. No need to explain. All know. ?

jrk23. (B) is wrong because it is saying 'will be' which means the results are not out and in future they will see who is going to win.
But the intended meaning was the results were already out. They only need to check or confirm it. (A) is correctly describing the intended meaning.

Option B uses "will be the winners", as compared to Option A using "are the winners".

The independent clause after the semicolon implies that the results are out i.e. the winners have been decided. "will be" implies the results are still unknown. The speaker's uncertainty doesn't change that fact.

Example:
Correct: The stock market is either up or down today; We'll need to check the closing price to be sure.
Correct: The stock market will be either up or down today; We'll need to wait for the closing price to be sure.
Wrong: The stock market will be either up or down today; We'll need to check the closing price to be sure.
