don't go too cheap - you get what you pay for! if they are doing it for free, how good can it be?

I used EditAvenue last year and was happy with their edits. Their rates are very reasonable too. Keep in mind though that: 1) there is a huge variability in editors, so make sure to pick one with an appropriate background 2) while they proofread a lot of business school application essays every year, that is not their main focus. They will only provide suggestions in terms of grammar, stylistic devices, etc. Do not expect any feedback on content, positioning, etc.

I used a service similar to the one ariel describes, called Editing U. It's just one guy so there's no variability in editors, but he's also reasonable ($50/hr) and I thought he did a good job.

Guys,
any news on that topic? I am almost done with my essays, I think the content is ok, but English needs polishing. Any companies/persons you would recommend?

Anyone know of a service that proofreads and critiques essays?

I've found some online but it's quite expensive (under 400 words for $95).

Is there a service out there that's inexpensive or free :-D (hopefully)?

Free? I don't think its possible but yeah inexpensive is possible professorwrite dot com is the best according to my experience..
Thanks and hope it should help..
