Struggling with Columbia's essay 1 at the moment. I have far too much to say and only 750 words to condense it in to.
Living up to my college title of "the procrastinator extraordinaire" by posting on just about every thread on GMATClub :)

I'm about 4 drafts into each of the Columbia essays. I started on them about a month ago when they released the J-Term essays. I gambled that they would be the same for ED and got lucky that they were (except that one essay was dropped).

holy jumping batman! the application isn't even out yet officially and you're on version 4.0?

Are you planning on hitting the submit button at 00:01am on August 13 '08 or something IHateTheGMAT? Now I feel like a complete slacker.

Solaris,

I've had to cut a lot of sentences that I really liked. It was quite painful.

I just finished drafts for all 5 of my Kellogg essays. My "Why Kellogg" has been through 9 revisions so I think it's getting close however the others still need some more work.

I am through second or third drafts of my Kellogg and Duke essays, although I am not in love with any of them... I have been working on them since Mid-May.

Planning on starting my Michigan essays tonight. Trying to take the approach of getting decent drafts for each, and using what I learn from each app to help with my others...

That being said, they all have a lot of work left to do...

Yeah I'm on my 4th or 5th draft of that one and I'm still around 850 words. I started with around 1800! Cutting words is tough. Once you get down to the later drafts you have to cut stuff that you REALLY don't want to get rid of. It's sucks, but you can't fit everything.

haha. Probably not that early but I do plan to get my app in by September 1st. I won't make 8/15 because I wont be getting my reccomenders started for another week or so and I need to give them enough time to write good recs.

Did Fuqua release their essays? Where can I find them?

Same here. I feel bad about it. I need to do some serious work starting this week. I was still finalizing my schools list up until now, but it is officially finalized.

Out of curiosity, what's the "finish line" that you all use to mark the completion of one "draft"?

When you hit the lights and go to sleep at 3am?
When it's ready for somebody to read and give feedback on?

I ask because my essays didn't really have discrete drafts, per se. It was one, long, continuous process of "tweaking".

Also, my favorite pastime in between writing sessions was watching an episode of Pride & Prejudice (the old A&E miniseries, not the Kiera Knightly version.)

Every time I put it on, my English abilities increase about tenfold for the next day or two because the screenplay is so amazing. :-D

Best of luck to you all.

How many R1 applications are people planning to submit? I'm only looking at 1-2 so that may be why I don't feel that sense of urgency yet.

That's one of my favorite movies of all times! I saw it just a few weeks back with a friend of mine who does the most amazing impression of Mrs. Bennet.

Most of my schools are going to be R1 apps. I travel a lot for work and work insane hours like many others on the forum, so for me the urgency is not only the R1 timeline but also the limited time I have to work on this stuff!

That said, I did procrastinate quite a bit yesterday - lots of time spent doing misc things like cleaning, playing oregon trail on facebook (yes I was trying really hard to not write essays!), watching a bad indian movie, etc. :?

5 R1s

But they are pretty spread out. I'll be done with my Columbia essays in a week or two (though I won't be able to submit the app until my recs are done) and my last deadline is at the end of October. Since my Columbia app will be done around the time most people are getting started on R1 apps, its more like I'm trying to do 4 R1 apps. Not to mention the fact that your first app takes the longest. Also, if they don't change their apps, 2 of my schools have really short applications. So I don't think I'm being to aggressive trying to do 5. Or at least I hope I'm not.
