Intent of the sentence will be that, the baseball players will take a swing when they are in one region and not take a swing, when they are outside the strike zone.
Lets see now
A. take a swing at a pitch far outside the strike zone and not swing at pitches directly in the strike zone.
singular pitch and plural pitches -> not parallel
B. swing at pitches far outside the strike zone and not swing at pitches directly in the strike zone.
Parallel.
C. be swinging at pitches far outside the strike zone and not swing at them when they are in the strike zone.
be swinging and not swing -> Not parallel
D. swing at pitches far outside the strike zone and not swing at a pitch when they are in there.
there , what is this referring to ?? ->Unclear
E. take a swing at a pitch far outside the strike zone and not swing when they are in the strike zone
and not swing at what ?? -> unclear

I opted for B over A but not able to understand why A is really incorrect. Can any one help?
