In the first read, the original sentence appears to be free of any errors. At this point, selecting this option right away is risky. Let's take a look at the options.
Reading vertically, I noticed there is a choice between 'will' and 'would' among the options. Using 'will', future tense, in the second part also requires future tense in the first part. However, we don't have an option with a future tense verb in the first part. Moreover, we should keep in mind that will or would is used in the cases when a supposition is informed in the original sentence.
In such a case, we always use plural present tense in first part while future tense in the second, or use plural past in the first part while future perfect in the second. Based on this rule, the original sentence makes one error, using "was placed".
This error is corrected in the last option E. Therefore, option is E is the correct answer.

Subjunctive hypothetical - requires a plural verb. A, B, C and D are straight eliminations.
E is the right answer.
