Exactly 'N' people are standing in a queue outside a store on black Friday, and these N people also include Daniel and Maria. What is the value of N?

(1) Daniel is 12th when counted from the front of the queue, and Maria is 10th when counted from the back of the queue.

(2) There are exactly 5 people between Daniel and Maria.

Statement 1 says no info about the number of people between Daniel and Maria. Insufficient

Statement 2 provides no info about the position of Daniel and Maria. Insufficient

Combining we have the total number of people present. 12+5+10=27 people

I think it should be E.

I & II are clearly insufficient.

Combining I & II:

a.\(- - - - - - - - - - - D - - - - -M- - - - - - - - -\) ( N = 12+5+10 = 27)
b. \(- - - - - M - - - - - D - - -\) (N = 15).

So, E.

Hi Rahul

Kudos for this perspective. But dont you think that in second case the total number of people would be something other than 18 (less than 18 maybe)

Yeah, it will be less than 18. Calculation mistake. Edited my previous post. In DS, I just look for 2 Values to arrive at the answer, so overlooked the calculation part.
