FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Webinar with Darden’s European Society |
https://blogs.darden.virginia.edu/admissions/files/2017/09/european-society-snapshot-300x169.png Four members of Darden’s European Society recently sat down to talk about why they chose Darden, what intrigued them about a global experience, and their experience thus far at Darden and in Charlottesville. You can read Felix, Ilja, Alexis and Josep’s bios below. Moderator and Admissions Director, Katherine Alford, asked the four what they have enjoyed or found surprising about Charlottesville. They all agreed that even though it’s a small town, there’s tons of culture – arts, music, food, vineyards, sports and more. When asked about their experience in the classroom and with their classmates, the group discussed how they have learned and grown in every class, even when their expectations were that the class would be covering content they already knew. Felix said he gets three days’ worth out of every day because there is so much to do and so much to learn. The four discussed the wealth of clubs and extracurricular options that abound at Darden – everything from the student government, to Darden Capital Management, to the outdoor sports club. Finally, the group suggested some great tips for anyone going through the application process with Darden. Check out the full webinar to hear all of what they say. You can learn more about Darden’s European Society on their website. Meet the Panel Members: Ilja Orre: Ilja was born and raised in Helsinki, Finland. He’s spent the last 10 years in the US, earning his Bachelor’s degree at College of Willam & Mary and working for Ferguson Enterprises, an industrial giant in sales and marketing management roles. Ilja’s next career step will be to join Bain & Co. in the Nordics, where he hopes to build a career in Bain’s Customer Strategy & Marketing group. Felix Artmann: Felix, 30, from Munich/Frankfurt Germany. He had undergraduate studies in Business and Mechanical Engineering. He chose to go for the entrepreneurial path after school right away and started as an entrepreneur in residence, became cofounder of Bonaverde and has been working in a seed venture capital company for the last 4 years. Felix wants to do something along the “entrepreneurial” value chain – from founding his own business to VC/PE. Alexis Moulin: Alexis from Lyon, France. He studied Business Administration at the University of Lyon and at the University of Marseille. He has a strong experience in analytics and managerial accounting. As a managerial accounting manager, Alexis helped the company he worked for 4 years to recover its profitability after a threatening slowdown and he is now eager to solve new financial challenges as intern for the next summer. After graduation, Alexis wants to work in a corporate finance role in a large corporation. Josep Martinez: Josep is from Barcelona. He studied Business Administration, Bachelor and Master, at ESADE Business School. Before Darden, he worked in turnaround consulting for 6 years, focusing in strategy and finance. He worked at a Corporate Development and Strategy department of an industrial company in London. After Darden, Josep wants to work in corporate development or corporate strategy for an industrial company in Europe. https://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/virginia ... FhAK_IgpRQ |

This is the first in an ongoing series exploring entrepreneurship in the executive formats of the Darden MBA. We think Darden’s case method and enterprise orientation is pretty great at preparing students to launch and lead their own business, but don’t take our word for it! https://blogs.darden.virginia.edu/admissions/files/2017/10/concert_for_charlottesville_18_da-300x200.jpg Concert for Charlottesville (Photos by Dan Addison, University Communications) On the last Sunday in September, an impressive slate of artists assembled by Dave Matthews donated their time and traveled from across the country and the world to support the Charlottesville and University communities in the wake of violent white supremacist demonstrations on Aug. 11 and 12. Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake, Ariana Grande, Chris Stapleton, Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, The Roots and Cage the Elephant, Coldplay and…Stevie Wonder played before thousands of community members in Scott Stadium, and many more watched the live stream online. Though tickets were free, attendees were encouraged to make a donation to the “Concert for Charlottesville Fund” at the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. That fund will benefit victims of the violence and their families, first responders and organizations dedicated to promoting equality and tolerance. Concert attendees said that the event provided a great way for the community to come together after the violence of that the recent August weekend. Stevie Wonder added that the concert “is truly the example that love can win,” and urged the crowd, “Use your gift, your song, your musicianship, your voice to spread the never-ending cry for love.” To read a complete recount of the Concert for Charlottesville, check out this UVA Today report by Caroline Newman. https://blogs.darden.virginia.edu/admissions/files/2017/10/MartinDavidsonLowRes600x800-225x300.jpg Earlier this week, Darden’s Senior Associate Dean and Global Chief Diversity Officer Martin Davidson hosted a webinar on diversity and inclusion throughout the community of Darden and the broader community of Charlottesville, VA. Martin began by explaining the program’s mission to make diversity and inclusion a part of Darden’s DNA, and to empower everyone – students, faculty and staff – to hold each other accountable in attaining this goal. Then, he addressed the school and the community’s reaction to the white supremacy events in August. The “variety of incredible outcomes” from the August events Martin enumerated include:
Reflecting on UVA’s history with Thomas Jefferson and its location south of the Mason-Dixon line, Martin proposed that these factors make our engagement in the racial dialogue even stronger and more active. While we might not always get everything right, we are talking and thinking, and this makes our community healthier. Martin Davidson has been with Darden for over 19 years, and is the first tenured African American professor. Watch the full webinar to hear his powerful message. https://blogs.darden.virginia.edu/admissions/files/2017/10/Rosslyn-proposed-interior-300x103.jpg Conceptual drawings of Darden’s new Rosslyn facility. Darden recently announced that it will open new facilities in the Washington, D.C., area. The dynamic space, housed on the top two floors of a modern high-rise in the Rosslyn district of Arlington, Virginia, boasts expansive views of the capital region and includes classrooms, offices and event space, opening up a world of new opportunities for the University of Virginia and for the Darden School’s Executive MBA (EMBA) and Executive Education programs in the D.C. area. This new space is representative of the growth of the EMBA and Executive Education programs. In 2016, Darden dramatically expanded the reach of its EMBA program, which includes an intensive Global Executive MBA format, when it welcomed the first cohort of the new Rosslyn section. This past August, nearly 70 new students joined the Rosslyn EMBA section for the 2017–18 academic year. When asked, Brett Twitty, Director of Admissions for Executive Formats, responded: Having a world-class facility in the DC area is an incredibly exciting development for our executive format students, but also for Darden generally. The past two years for our Executive MBA Program have been filled with highlights, and the executive formats of the Darden MBA have never been more popular. As a program, we have a tremendous amount of momentum, and the launch of this new space is the latest reflection of this trajectory. FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Charlottesville: We Run This Town |
Written by Steven Menendez, MBA Class of 2018 One of my favorite things about living in Charlottesville is the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of outdoor activities: camping, hiking, tubing, and my favorite, running. There is nothing better on a beautiful Charlottesville afternoon than to go for a run and explore the city. From road running to trails, Charlottesville has it all. Most of the streets have generous sidewalks, and you can take a run through the picturesque neighborhoods, the shops on the downtown mall, or through the University of Virginia Grounds. For those who prefer a different terrain, the Rivanna Trail system forms a 20-mile loop of wooded trails around the city of Charlottesville. Where else can you take a run past the Rotunda on the Lawn, a UNESCO World Heritage Site? When I first moved to Charlottesville, running helped me learn where everything is and made me feel like this town was becoming my home. Charlottesville also has a strong running community. There are local running stores, like Ragged Mountain and Crozet Running and numerous races of various lengths. Last year I ran a trail half marathon through the mountains of Crozet and a couple four-mile races in town. There were lots of spectators along the courses, and of course, Bodos Bagels at the end to celebrate a successful finish. My favorite running community has been the Darden Running Club (I am Co-President of the club this year, so I may be a little biased). We meet twice a week for runs before class. It’s been a great way to get to know other Darden students, share running tips, and get a good workout in amid the busy Darden schedule. We also participate in local races and running charity events. Whatever your outdoor pursuit, Charlottesville has something for you. And for all you runners out there, you can find no better place to spend two years to get a world-class business education and experience world-class running than Darden! https://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/virginia ... 1epm-lyCYM |
FROM Darden Admissions Blog: The Darden Network of Executive Women |
What is the name of your student organization? What is the purpose of your student organization? There is a NEW organization at Darden! We’re the Darden Network of Executive Women (The Darden NEW), an organization dedicated to networking and professional development specifically focused on the Darden Executive MBA Program’s women, both current students and alumni. Why did you start your organization? We formed this organization because the women in the classes of 2018 and 2019 sought a more formal construct to support one another, to build our personal and professional networks, and to seek professional development opportunities. While there is a women’s organization within the residential program, we found that the unique Executive MBA schedule, along with the different career and life stages of executive students, necessitated the formation of an organization just for us. Meeting with so many dynamic women from the other enrolled classes in the start-up of the organization proved to us how impactful NEW will be. What are your goals for your organization? Are you planning any programming or activities in the upcoming year? As this is the first year of the Network, we are focusing on assessing the wants and needs of the Darden Executive Women’s community, building our brand, and setting a foundation of connections among current students and alumni. We’re planning to establish an online presence, host guest speaker events, networking events, and social events. As we grow the organization, we hope that these activities and resources will become a key part of the Executive MBA experience for students who want to be a part of our organization, and will also be something that alumni want to support after graduation as well. In your opinion, what is the best thing about Darden’s Executive MBA Program? Hands down, the Darden community is the best thing about Darden’s Executive MBA Program. This is an environment where students who say “Why isn’t there a group for the Executive MBA women?” get to answer it themselves by creating one, and where the faculty and staff are behind the students in doing so. Students are on board and champion for each other. The collegiality and spirit of the Darden community permeates not only the Darden Network for Executive Women, but every facet of the school and the Executive MBA Program. Students are genuinely invested in supporting one another in learning, as opposed to competing with one another. We celebrate one another’s individual accomplishments. Faculty truly care about the students. The program staff is fantastically supportive. There are so many moving parts, but they all come together to make Darden work for busy professionals. Additionally, the self-actualization that transpires for each student in the Executive MBA Program is amazing. Along with traditional quantitative MBA courses, students take courses focused on leading organizations, global leadership, management communication, negotiations, and professional advancement; these courses require deep self-reflection. The program builds in time for personality assessments, career assessments, and career-coaching; this time and opportunity is rare and precious. The self-awareness students gain helps them shape their career paths and truly prepares them for being leaders of leaders. What advice would you offer a prospective student considering the executive formats of the Darden MBA? If you’re considering this program, think about what you hope to get out of it, and what you value in a prospective MBA experience. What are you hoping to accomplish through getting an MBA in the short term? In the long term? Will Darden help you achieve your goals? Do you need an MBA to achieve these goals? This program invests a lot into its students, and expects a lot of its students – this is not a part-time program, but an alternatively-scheduled full-time program. How will this experience fit into your life? The Executive MBA program at Darden is an amazing program. It uses the case method – a different pedagogical approach than most programs, and it truly is a community. Get to know the program, the faculty and staff, the students, and see if it feels right for you. If you’re confident in why you want an MBA, and what you want out of an MBA program, you’re best positioned to find the right program for you. Darden will be a transformational experience for you. How can an interested prospective student connect with your organization? They can reach out to our leadership team!
