Concert for Charlottesville Shows Love Can Win [#permalink]
FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Concert for Charlottesville Shows Love Can Win
https://blogs.darden.virginia.edu/admissions/files/2017/10/concert_for_charlottesville_18_da-300x200.jpg
Concert for Charlottesville (Photos by Dan Addison, University Communications)

On the last Sunday in September, an impressive slate of artists assembled by Dave Matthews donated their time and traveled from across the country and the world to support the Charlottesville and University communities in the wake of violent white supremacist demonstrations on Aug. 11 and 12. Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake, Ariana Grande, Chris Stapleton, Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, The Roots and Cage the Elephant, Coldplay and…Stevie Wonder played before thousands of community members in Scott Stadium, and many more watched the live stream online.

Though tickets were free, attendees were encouraged to make a donation to the “Concert for Charlottesville Fund” at the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. That fund will benefit victims of the violence and their families, first responders and organizations dedicated to promoting equality and tolerance.

Concert attendees said that the event provided a great way for the community to come together after the violence of that the recent August weekend. Stevie Wonder added that the concert “is truly the example that love can win,” and urged the crowd, “Use your gift, your song, your musicianship, your voice to spread the never-ending cry for love.”

To read a complete recount of the Concert for Charlottesville, check out this UVA Today report by Caroline Newman. (Content: Caroline Newman)

Martin Davidson on Diversity at Darden Webinar [#permalink]
FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Martin Davidson on Diversity at Darden Webinar
https://blogs.darden.virginia.edu/admissions/files/2017/10/MartinDavidsonLowRes600x800-225x300.jpg
Earlier this week, Darden’s Senior Associate Dean and Global Chief Diversity Officer Martin Davidson hosted a webinar on diversity and inclusion throughout the community of Darden and the broader community of Charlottesville, VA.

Martin began by explaining the program’s mission to make diversity and inclusion a part of Darden’s DNA, and to empower everyone – students, faculty and staff – to hold each other accountable in attaining this goal. Then, he addressed the school and the community’s reaction to the white supremacy events in August.

The “variety of incredible outcomes” from the August events Martin enumerated include:

  • Scrutinizing what we could have done better before and during the events, and how we can make changes in security to make the University an even safer place.
  • A heightened focus and energy in making this a more inclusive community, not only at Darden, but at the University and in the community of Charlottesville.
  • A surge of brainstorming sessions and discussions on diversity and inclusion in general; recently Darden held “One Darden Week” celebrating our diverse global community through various events, workshops and discussions.
  • Providing diversity training for faculty and staff teaching them how to lead more inclusively.
When asked how we may have fallen short in our attempts to be an inclusive community, Martin explained that this happens when we don’t encourage people to stand up and say or do what may be unpopular, in an attempt to keep the community a pleasant and collegial place.

Reflecting on UVA’s history with Thomas Jefferson and its location south of the Mason-Dixon line, Martin proposed that these factors make our engagement in the racial dialogue even stronger and more active. While we might not always get everything right, we are talking and thinking, and this makes our community healthier.

Martin Davidson has been with Darden for over 19 years, and is the first tenured African American professor. Watch the full webinar to hear his powerful message. And read more about diversity and inclusion at Darden.

Darden Admissions Wants to Talk! [#permalink]
FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Darden Admissions Wants to Talk!

Watch: Phone Conversation Tips

One of the best things about executive format recruitment is all the interaction we get to have with our prospective students.

As you may know, we offer a number of different ways for prospective students to connect with us – from events to one-on-one meetings – and it can sometimes be a little hard to know where to begin. Well, we are here to help!

Darden admissions offers tons of events, and each will provide you different insights into our Executive MBA Program. In other words, you can’t go wrong! But as a first step, you may want to consider scheduling a phone conversation.

These 30-minute conversations with a member of our Admissions Committee are an easy and convenient way for you to learn more about our executive formats – Executive MBA (EMBA) and Global Executive MBA (GEMBA) – and locations – Charlottesville and the Washington, DC area – and to ask any initial questions about Darden and/or your potential fit.

While there are a number of different questions that come up during these calls, here are a few of the most frequent ones:

  • How are your EMBA format and GEMBA format similar? How are they different?
  • You have locations in Charlottesville and the Washington, DC area – how do the locations compare?
  • What is the case method?
  • What career support do you provide your executive format students?
  • Is a standardized test required as part of your admissions process? If so, is there a waiver process?
  • What is the Executive Assessment?
  • Do you offer merit scholarships?
If you schedule a conversation, we encourage you to spend some time reviewing the basic structure and design of our program before your call. This preliminary review will allow you to have a more productive and meaningful conversation, and ensure that the Admissions Committee member has more time to understand your interests, your goals and your reasons for pursuing your MBA.

For a few more tips on maximizing your call, be sure to check out this video.

https://blogs.darden.virginia.edu/admissions/files/2017/10/MSDS-MBA-300x200.jpg
The UVA Data Science Institute (DSI) and the Darden School of Business have partnered to provide an opportunity for students to earn a Master of Science in Data Science and a Master of Business Administration in 24 months. Partnering these two schools brings the best of both: Darden’s No. 1 best education experience in the world (The Economist, 2011-2016) and DSI’s action-oriented 11-month curriculum.

What does the program promise? Developing coveted hires and indispensable leaders in a variety of fields, including consulting, finance and technology. Interested? Learn more about the program. When asked about the program, current MSDS+MBA student, Ab Boxley answered,

“The Darden degree gives the MSDS the manager’s context, the MSDS gives Darden inspiration. It’s a very nice combination of technical skills and recognizing where those skills might be applicable.”

If you’d like to hear more from current students and the program’s faculty advisor, Raj Venkatesan, register for our MSDS+MBA webinar this Thursday, 12 October. Audience members will be able to ask questions about the program, application process, and more.

New “Dynamic Space” for Darden in DC [#permalink]
FROM Darden Admissions Blog: New “Dynamic Space” for Darden in DC
https://blogs.darden.virginia.edu/admissions/files/2017/10/Rosslyn-proposed-interior-300x103.jpg
Conceptual drawings of Darden’s new Rosslyn facility.

Darden recently announced that it will open new facilities in the Washington, D.C., area. The dynamic space, housed on the top two floors of a modern high-rise in the Rosslyn district of Arlington, Virginia, boasts expansive views of the capital region and includes classrooms, offices and event space, opening up a world of new opportunities for the University of Virginia and for the Darden School’s Executive MBA (EMBA) and Executive Education programs in the D.C. area.

This new space is representative of the growth of the EMBA and Executive Education programs. In 2016, Darden dramatically expanded the reach of its EMBA program, which includes an intensive Global Executive MBA format, when it welcomed the first cohort of the new Rosslyn section. This past August, nearly 70 new students joined the Rosslyn EMBA section for the 2017–18 academic year. When asked, Brett Twitty, Director of Admissions for Executive Formats, responded:

Having a world-class facility in the DC area is an incredibly exciting development for our executive format students, but also for Darden generally. The past two years for our Executive MBA Program have been filled with highlights, and the executive formats of the Darden MBA have never been more popular. As a program, we have a tremendous amount of momentum, and the launch of this new space is the latest reflection of this trajectory.

Darden’s First Resilience Week for Mental Health and Well Being [#permalink]
FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Darden’s First Resilience Week for Mental Health and Well Being
Darden is proudly beginning our first Resilience Week on grounds today with the aim of establishing an institution-wide foundation for helping members of the Darden community become more resilient individuals and business leaders, and bringing awareness to a wide range of issues thoughtfully within a diverse – and internationally diverse – community.

Darden students, faculty and staff are hosting a number of events each day this week, and all are invited to attend as much of the programming as possible, some of which includes:

  • A facilitated discussion processing what it means to be a woman at Darden, considering topics such as identity, leading with confidence and practicing resilience as a high-performer.
  • A workshop exploring how to use sports psychology or visualization techniques in job interviews, negotiations and business scenarios.
  • A townhall focusing on the theme of resilience in the personal experiences of LGBTQ Darden students after coming out and re-entering society.
Driven by a passion for well-being, MBA Class of 2018 student Catherine Aranda spearheaded the initiation of Darden’s first Resilience Week. After a number of years in the non-profit sector, Catherine discovered Darden through the MLT. Although she credits the stress of preparing for the GMAT for her initial forays into mindfulness, health and mental wellness became significant to Catherine after heading into college immediately following the loss of her mother.

Resilience Week is not an isolated week at Darden, but is part of a greater thoughtfulness on how the school and how each student can help support one another through a more comprehensive mental health and wellness program.

Video: Why ‘Hoos Love to Call Charlottesville Home
Why do ‘Hoos love Charlottesville?

  • It’s a natural playground, with more than 25 parks and trails for students and residents to enjoy.
  • It’s a home that welcomes not only students and faculty, but also refugees. Since the Internal Rescue Committee office opened in 1998, the city has welcomed more than 3,500 refugees from 32 countries.
  • It centers around a unique pedestrian Downtown Mall, with more than 120 shops and 30 restaurants, along with several theaters and music venues.
  • It’s a small business haven, with more than 2,400 businesses with 500 or fewer employees.
  • It’s a foodie’s paradise, ranking among the top 15 cities in the country in restaurants per capita.
  • It’s a growing wine region, with approximately 40 wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries, and that number seems to increase each year.
  • It’s an artistic powerhouse, proudly serving as home to artists from Georgia O’Keeffe to Dave Matthews – who recently organized the star-studded Concert for Charlottesville – and authors such as William Faulkner, Rita Dove and John Grisham.
  • It’s a living museum, with abundant reminders of the powerful role the city and the Commonwealth of Virginia have played in American history. The University’s Academical Village, together with Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Charlottesville: We Run This Town [#permalink]
FROM Darden Admissions Blog: Charlottesville: We Run This Town
Written by Steven Menendez, MBA Class of 2018

One of my favorite things about living in Charlottesville is the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of outdoor activities: camping, hiking, tubing, and my favorite, running. There is nothing better on a beautiful Charlottesville afternoon than to go for a run and explore the city. From road running to trails, Charlottesville has it all. Most of the streets have generous sidewalks, and you can take a run through the picturesque neighborhoods, the shops on the downtown mall, or through the University of Virginia Grounds. For those who prefer a different terrain, the Rivanna Trail system forms a 20-mile loop of wooded trails around the city of Charlottesville. Where else can you take a run past the Rotunda on the Lawn, a UNESCO World Heritage Site? When I first moved to Charlottesville, running helped me learn where everything is and made me feel like this town was becoming my home.

Charlottesville also has a strong running community. There are local running stores, like Ragged Mountain and Crozet Running and numerous races of various lengths. Last year I ran a trail half marathon through the mountains of Crozet and a couple four-mile races in town. There were lots of spectators along the courses, and of course, Bodos Bagels at the end to celebrate a successful finish.

My favorite running community has been the Darden Running Club (I am Co-President of the club this year, so I may be a little biased). We meet twice a week for runs before class. It’s been a great way to get to know other Darden students, share running tips, and get a good workout in amid the busy Darden schedule. We also participate in local races and running charity events.

Whatever your outdoor pursuit, Charlottesville has something for you. And for all you runners out there, you can find no better place to spend two years to get a world-class business education and experience world-class running than Darden!

The Darden Network of Executive Women [#permalink]
FROM Darden Admissions Blog: The Darden Network of Executive Women
What is the name of your student organization? What is the purpose of your student organization?

There is a NEW organization at Darden! We’re the Darden Network of Executive Women (The Darden NEW), an organization dedicated to networking and professional development specifically focused on the Darden Executive MBA Program’s women, both current students and alumni.

Why did you start your organization?

We formed this organization because the women in the classes of 2018 and 2019 sought a more formal construct to support one another, to build our personal and professional networks, and to seek professional development opportunities. While there is a women’s organization within the residential program, we found that the unique Executive MBA schedule, along with the different career and life stages of executive students, necessitated the formation of an organization just for us. Meeting with so many dynamic women from the other enrolled classes in the start-up of the organization proved to us how impactful NEW will be.

What are your goals for your organization? Are you planning any programming or activities in the upcoming year?

As this is the first year of the Network, we are focusing on assessing the wants and needs of the Darden Executive Women’s community, building our brand, and setting a foundation of connections among current students and alumni. We’re planning to establish an online presence, host guest speaker events, networking events, and social events. As we grow the organization, we hope that these activities and resources will become a key part of the Executive MBA experience for students who want to be a part of our organization, and will also be something that alumni want to support after graduation as well.

In your opinion, what is the best thing about Darden’s Executive MBA Program?

Hands down, the Darden community is the best thing about Darden’s Executive MBA Program. This is an environment where students who say “Why isn’t there a group for the Executive MBA women?” get to answer it themselves by creating one, and where the faculty and staff are behind the students in doing so.

Students are on board and champion for each other. The collegiality and spirit of the Darden community permeates not only the Darden Network for Executive Women, but every facet of the school and the Executive MBA Program. Students are genuinely invested in supporting one another in learning, as opposed to competing with one another. We celebrate one another’s individual accomplishments. Faculty truly care about the students. The program staff is fantastically supportive. There are so many moving parts, but they all come together to make Darden work for busy professionals.

Additionally, the self-actualization that transpires for each student in the Executive MBA Program is amazing. Along with traditional quantitative MBA courses, students take courses focused on leading organizations, global leadership, management communication, negotiations, and professional advancement; these courses require deep self-reflection. The program builds in time for personality assessments, career assessments, and career-coaching; this time and opportunity is rare and precious. The self-awareness students gain helps them shape their career paths and truly prepares them for being leaders of leaders.

What advice would you offer a prospective student considering the executive formats of the Darden MBA?

If you’re considering this program, think about what you hope to get out of it, and what you value in a prospective MBA experience. What are you hoping to accomplish through getting an MBA in the short term? In the long term? Will Darden help you achieve your goals? Do you need an MBA to achieve these goals? This program invests a lot into its students, and expects a lot of its students – this is not a part-time program, but an alternatively-scheduled full-time program. How will this experience fit into your life?

The Executive MBA program at Darden is an amazing program. It uses the case method – a different pedagogical approach than most programs, and it truly is a community. Get to know the program, the faculty and staff, the students, and see if it feels right for you. If you’re confident in why you want an MBA, and what you want out of an MBA program, you’re best positioned to find the right program for you. Darden will be a transformational experience for you.
