I go with D... can't really explain this one, reading it aloud just "sounds right"

semicolon RULE : Use a semicolon between two independent clauses which are complete in meaning by themselves.
IMO A

I dont believe D corrects the scentense to have independent clauses.

Whats the OA ?

if red trout means read flesh then, the usage of were is incorrect..

i will go with A..

A has the term "was" which implies that trout is singular.

abundant and caught need to be parallel in tense.
