Hi, Today, I have received a mail from Rotman School of Management regarding their Master of Management Analytics program. I had mailed them asking, whether I am eligible to apply for their Master's program. Their response was negative. Before I share their response, I would like to share my profile in details:
Education: Bachelors of Business Administration ( 2011) Job Experience: 6 years ( Worked for the worlds largest building materials company in the domain of Marketing). Nationality: Bangladeshi ( Canadian PR holder) GMAT: Not Given Note: I have a keen interest in pursuing a masters degree in the field of analytics. But I do not have strong statistics, mathematics or computer programming skills.
Below is their response:
The program is aimed at recent graduates with a strong quantitative background and computational proficiency. The elements of an application we will be considering are: quantitative proficiency, the GPA you achieved in the last year of your undergraduate degree, computational proficiency, your resume, two academic references, plus your communication and interpersonal skills, as evidenced in your online application and video essays. We will be assessing quantitative and computational proficiency through an applicant’s academic history. We are looking for demonstrated abilities in mathematics, statistics, data analysis and computer science/programming. As the program is intense in nature, 9 months, students do need to have the quantitative and computational skills to hit the ground running. For computational proficiency, we are looking at your programming knowledge and what you have used it for. This could be formal computer science courses, or extracurricular activities. We need to see that you are proficient in at least one programming language, such as R, Python, SAS, Tableau.
In terms of your suitability for the program, based on the resume you had provided below, you would not be a typical candidate we would see. The program does not require applicants to have any work experience. As such, the vast majority of our incoming class consists of students who have just completed their bachelor degrees. The reason why this program is more suitable for students who are just completing their undergraduate degree is because the program is a highly technical, very intense 9-month degree, during which students are expected to be proficient in statistics, econometrics and programming. The material covered in the quant courses is expected to be fresh in their minds because the duration of the program is very short and there is no time for review. Also, the program is intended to prepare graduates for entry-level positions, and our career services will focus on this. So, as someone who would be coming in with more professional background, this is important to mention because your classmates would be of a group with significantly less experience. While our career services is there to help more experienced students land jobs as well, the types of roles that recruiters are presenting us are generally not very senior. This is important to keep in mind because we want everyone in the program to get out of it what they came in expecting.
Requesting feedback from you all.
