$$a^2 + 6a + 1 = -7$$

$$a^2 + 6a + 8 = 0$$

$$(a+4) (a+2) = 0$$

$$a = -2$$ or $$-4$$

You could do it by backsolving and picking a number from the answer choice.

If we try a = -4

then $$(-4)^2 + 6 * -4 * 1 + 1 = 16 -24 + 1 = -7$$
