Hi,
I really confused about this question. For the correct answer C, I don't know why "down from nearly three-quarters only a decade ago" is correct. And for the entire sentence, I don't know if the population of non-Hispanic Whites reduce from nearly three-quarters to less than a half? And minority means small part, I don't think three-quarters of non-Hispanic Whites are small parts. Please help~

For the first time in the modern era, non-Hispanic Whites are officially a minority in California, which amounts to a little less than half the population of the state, down from nearly there-quarters only a decade ago.

(A) which amounts to a little less than half the population of the state, down from nearly three-quarters only a decade ago - which incorrectly refers to California

(B) which amounts to a little less than half the population of the state, down from a decade ago, when it was nearly three-quarters - same as A

(C) and that amounts to a little less than half the population of the state, down from a decade ago, when they were nearly three-quarters - whenever that is used as a demonstrative pronoun, that must be immediately followed by a noun; so basically that should be used as an adjective

(D) amounting to a little less than half the population of the state, down from nearly three-quarters a decade ago - Correct

(E) amounting to a little less than half the population of the state, down from what it was a decade ago by nearly three-quarters - what does it refer to ; also this changes the meaning

Answer D

(A) which amounts to a little less than half the population of the state, down from nearly three-quarters only a decade ago ---"which" is modifying "California" instead of "non-Hispanic Whites"

(B) which amounts to a little less than half the population of the state, down from a decade ago, when it was nearly three-quarters ---"which" is modifying "California" instead of "non-Hispanic Whites"

(C) and that amounts to a little less than half the population of the state, down from a decade ago, when they were nearly three-quarters --"that and which" can't modify living beings

(D) amounting to a little less than half the population of the state, down from nearly three-quarters a decade ago

(E) amounting to a little less than half the population of the state, down from what it was a decade ago by nearly three-quarters ---too wordy

(D)

Am I correct in saying in (E) what must refer to a verb and hence it is incorrect.

In (D), down from .. this phrase is a noun modifier correctly population of the state.

look at choice A.
the white are the minority, which is one third of population. this mean the white are the minority of the kind , not of the kind which is two third of population. . this is not logic.
in contrast, in choice D, amounting to..... show a reason/explanation for the main clause. in this sentence, the ideas are closely related.

for non native speaker, this problem is hard
i will think of "which " as " of the kind .." . if we think this way we will realize the illogic relation in choice A.

yes. it is hard
