Hi everyone, here is my GMAT story. Having given both the online and the offline GMAT exam, I hope that readers would find my experience useful.
Sometime in May , I decided to attempt the GMAT . I am an Indian woman with no background in STEM, my major has been accounting and my professional qualification is CA (Chartered Accountant ). I ordered the entire set of Manhattan strategy guides and began brushing my concepts of math . Since, the last time I had studied Math was in 2007, I thought it fit to revise all the scary looking concepts . I will emphasize on my Quant journey a bit more, as I believe that I neither have the desired V40 nor the required experience to give tips on verbal.
For one month, I revised and re revised all the Strategy guides. I was extremely under confident about my ability to score in Quant. Also, Manhattan's practice sets in Quant looked ridiculously hard every time I attempted them. Finally, on 14th June, I took my first
MGMAT mock- score was 590 (Q 35 V ). I resolved to work harder and soon I started practicing from the OGs . After doing the entire OG twice, I was ready to take more
MGMAT Mocks. I was somehow never convinced about my ability to get a good score. Most of the posts on GMAT highlighted the statistic that Indians score well in Quant. I used to think, your's truly is here to break that stereotype. I used to score anything in between Q37 to Q43 in all my
MGMAT mocks. Attributing it to nerves, I continued to practice both Verbal and Quant from the OGs in the hope of improving my speed. Eventually, I also gave Offical GMAT practice tests 1 and 2 . I never crossed more than Q 44 in either of the tests.
Fast forward to August . By the first week of August, I had solved the main OG as well as the Quant only OG thrice . Also, at that time, the COVID crisis was out of hand in my city. So, to be on the safer side, I booked my test date for the online GMAT on 19th August 2020. But , but, immediately soon after, a family member who I share my home with was detected with COVID. I still managed to practice for my exam. I also purchased official practice exams 3 and 4 from GMAC. On my third exam, I scored Q45 and an overall of 650. I felt that I would be able to push to 680 on test day. However, to be sure and to ensure that I've got enough practice in both Quant and Verbal, I postponed my test by 10 days and took a new date on 24/08/2020. 3 days before, on 21/08, I took the last practice exam and touched 640. Hmmmm. I decided to take the exam neverthless.
Exam day 24/08/2020. I seamlessly logged in, completed the check in formalities, spoke to the proctor and was ready to begin my test 10 mins before schedule. The check in process was smooth and I was as calm as I could remain. Quant section went on seamlessly, verbal was tricky and IR was okay. Taking the exam at home was a different experience . I personally wouldn't recommend it, particularly if you have young kids in the house. Post the exam, I nervously waited for my score report for three days . On the fourth day, I woke up to an email from GMAC. When I saw my score, it was 640.I had scored Q47 and V31 . I was a little sad, but soon after I resolved to take the exam again in a short duration.
Attempt 2 prep- September 2020.
I signed up for the Egmat verbal course and also ordered Advanced Quant from
MGMAT. I started with CR and then moved on to RC and then subsequently to SC. Although, my verbal scores aren't reflective of the true potential of the course , I would highly recommend it to all non natives who are struggling to understand verbal . It is important to apply the process taught to discern between the correct and the incorrect answer choices. Also, practice from the Scholaranium , as much as you can. Two weeks after beginning prep for attempt 2, I gave another GMAC practice exam. Sadly, this too was a 640 and my Quant score had again fallen to Q44 . Disheartened, I started doing the
MGMAT Advanced Quant book. I scheduled my GMAC practice exam 5 days later. I practiced all the tricks and techniques given by
MGMAT and solved all the hard questions. In that Mock, I touched 680 for the first time with my Quant score again back to 47. With a sigh of relief, I booked my test date for 29/09/2020.
I kept on practicing from
E Gmat for verbal and
MGMAT advanced quant for quant. I could feel a surge in my abilities with
MGMAT. I highly recommend this book only for those who have done the OGs. The OGs build a base,
MGMAT Advanced Quant cements it. I also did timed practice for Quant by doing only the Quant section from
MGMAT mocks. On 26th, I took my last mock, again 680.
Test date-
I went with the Verbal, Quant, IR,AWA selection. I managed to finish verbal with 10 seconds to spare.(

) In quant, i felt that the inital two questions were easy, then the level kept on going higher, I finished with 1 min to spare. Breezed through IR and AWA as well. It was then time to submit. Before submitting the essay, I closed my eyes and held my breath. Soon, 700 flashed !!!!!!

.
So, my struggle to touch 700 has thus come to an end.
I could have done more with verbal, but I'm at peace with my score. i hope it's enough for the B schools I'm applying to .
Now, I hope to make it to the schools of my choice.
Hope you have enjoyed reading my story.
For Indian applicants- please take your passport to the test centre.
Thank you for sharing your story, & congratulations on getting the desired score.
