I know this is not how the algorithm works but any idea how many questions away I was from a 42 in Verbal ?
Probably around 3.

Taking many practice tests, both official and third-party tests, under realistic conditions could help you perform better under test pressure.

Let us know how you do next time.

Thanks for the input Marty ! Sigh ! I knew the questions I had messed up as soon as I took my break after verbal and quant . By the time I got into the cab home I had solved a couple of verbal and quant questions I missed in the exam in my head . I have a very hard time letting questions go , and then it’s like a deer in the headlights situation where I freeze .

If you get your ESR, consider comparing it with some V42+ ESR data.

Gratz on the 710 by the way. A positive is that you have a 700+ score already in the bag. If you take the exam at the same center, consider asking them to give you some fresh markers so you don't run into the same issue. For time management, using time markers may be helpful as well.

Thanks for the answer and I know two things that in need to work on are exam anxiety and time management. And I understand I was doing well until the time I ran into some tough questions. Ha ha ha not solving another question without a timer ever ! Lesson learned

Congrats on crossing the 700 level!

P.S. If you are gunning for 700+, you will see questions that you will have NO idea how to solve or approach. You have to be prepared to fight and then give up after 2 mins. Sorry.
Sometimes these are experimental and not polished questions so you have to be reasonable with time and not try to answer at all cost... making a mistake is not going to crash your score. However, spending 2x time on a question is guaranteed to make at least 1 more mistake and likely 2.

Have been preparing on and off for the past 4 months while working a FT job that requires me to travel .
Have been comfortable in practice exams and GMAT prep . Although I have failed to recreate test conditions while taking the practice tests due to paucity of complete block of time .
Gave GMAT yesterday , and what a wake up call . Attempted verbal first and everything was going great until the 15 th question when I couldn’t make sense of a CR question. And boy was there panic . Before I knew I had lost all time advantage I had gained . But I was doing well so was met with a 700 level RC next. And then it all went downhill , options did not make sense even after 5 readings of the question . More panic 8 questions left and 7 minutes remained . More panic as I hit another CR that I couldn’t decipher . Ended up with 30 seconds for last two questions each.

Calmed down a bit drank some cold water in the break . 2 easy questions and then BAM a question that with big numbers and a lot of calculation if I solved it my way. Tried to think of a different way couldn’t , and now too late to solve with the length calculations . Guess and move on . Okay sailing for the next 10-12 questions . Again met by a type of question never seen before. 5 lines plus a diagram to accompany and it was a DS question. I could not even understand the question. I somehow found myself to be behind in time again . Again rushed through the last 10 in 15 mins .

Will be giving again , as hopefully this is the worst I could do . Disappointed yes but also quite hopeful that if I can get my emotions under control il be able to do better .

Also The markers at the centre kept drying up if not in use for 10 seconds then every time I had to use had to waste a couple of seconds to get it working again on every question. What is it with centres trying to make such a high pressure situation worse ?

Thanks bb ! Yeah will try and cut my losses earlier . I’ve been about the test can’t help but lament that I let a good score slip away. Looking back on the prep I’ve realised that some CR questions throw me off . Mostly those that have a convoluted question stem (also sometimes in RC). I didn’t really go for a book for CR prep just the questions here and the OG . Would a book like CR Bible help in such a case ? Any tips for a 4 point bump in the Verbal section ?

I would say the hard CR’s are very diff animals from medium. They are not very pattern based and would throw me off…

They would take dissecting after the fact to chase them. I guess you can pick some of the hardest gmat prep CRs and go through them to get your confidence up n

This is a good point you brought up. Make sure to thoroughly test your markers before beginning any section.
