conclusion is: no algae = fewer eggs, so algae must be helping eggs stick & stay protected. we need something that gives a diff reason for fewer eggs in scraped areas

A says fish actually prefer bare surfaces over algae — but that contradicts the actual data (scraped = fewer eggs), so this doesn't fit logically

C just repeats/supports the researchers' own theory, doesn't hurt it.


D talks about hatching rate being a better metric, but that's a nitpick about measurement not valid

E is about long-term overgrowth problems, totally unrelated

B is the one as it says scraping itself damages the surface underneath, making it a worse spot for eggs. so the fewer eggs might have nothing to do with algae protects eggs it could just be that scraping wrecked the surface and fish don't wanna lay eggs there anymore regardless of algae.

So now I see we have 2 things eggs hatching sites on coral reafs and reproduction in fishes. A. Irrelevant as it looks like it contradcits but it doesent and creates an enexplained paradox. If the fish is seen to prefer bare surface, then why dont we see bare surfaces have more eggs but have fewer eggs. It doesent explain things properly and doesent undermine the reasoning
B. Relevant as it provides an alternative explanation for the data and destroys the causal link. The reason the scraped reefs had fewer eggs was not because they lacked the benefits of algae but because of the damage caused by the researchers while scraping them. This exposes the variable caused by the scraping.
C. Irrelevant as it supports and strengthens the researchers conclusion by saying exactly how algae protects the eggs.
D. Irrelevant as it doesent help at all to what is required here. Whether we count intact or hatched eggs, is not the issue. The main problem is figuring out why there was such a big difference between the 2 experimental groups.
E. Irrelevant as it just discusses the long term environmental impact of unchecked algae and doesent explain why the fish laid fewer eggs during this specific experiment

We need to weaken the assumption that the absence of algae caused the difference. I think option B would be an alternative cause, as scrapping may have damaged the reef, causing fewer eggs regardless of the algae.

Looking at other options:
A - Contradicts evidence - if fish preferred bare reefs, the scraped sections should have had more eggs.
C - Strengthens instead
D - Wrong comparison that it questions the metric, but not the cause of the difference.
E - Seems irrelevant

This is an easy question imo as there is clearly one definite answer that probably weakens the argument against algae growth supporting fish populations and egg safety.
Apart from E, every other option is either strengthening the conclusion or is not sufficiently relevant to weaken the conclusion or impact it on its own.

Question stem is saying that there are Algae's which cover the coral and that covered bed is used by many fish to lay eggs. To check how the algae cover impacts the egg laying, the researchers took 20 areas, removed algae from 10 and observed the differences. Results, undisturbed (with algae) had more eggs than the disturbed (without algae) ones and basis this, they concluded that algae is the factor which facilitates reproduction by providing protection and attachment.

But what if we find out that due to some other disturbance or reason, many fish did not lay eggs in the first place in the areas where the algaes were removed from. That can contribute to weakening the argument.

A. If fish in the study prefer the bare surfaces, then the result should have been opposite of what they are. This is not relevant.
C. This is supporting the argument by saying that algae give some advantage and hence are preferable areas of laying eggs.
D. We are not questioning the methodology used, but are trying to identify any alternate logic or a weakener to identify gaps in the reasoning/interpretation of the results of the method already used.
