Q79 is a bummer. You got 3 questions wrong on the trot and that would have significantly hurt your score.

Time management is another area that you need to take care of. With review/edit facility now available on GMAT, it is usually a bad idea to spend 5+ minutes on any single question.

If time management was an issue, using question time markers may help. For Verbal, consider checking out Manhattan-Prep's 6th Edition for Critical Reasoning. For RC, becoming familiar with how inference questions work could be helpful as well. For Quant, it may be worth checking out posted debriefs by people who've scored well on Quant/improved their Quant scores (you could see what they did/used and maybe take some quick tips as well).

How to score high on the GMAT. Why solving approach is important.

Appeared for GMAT FE for the first time yesterday and scored a 605 (Q79/V81/DI80). Self prepped for around 2-3 months with a full time job. Not super consistent I’ll admit. Tbh I’m disappointed with my verbal score. On my recent mocks I scored 83, 85 and 88, but ended up with an 81 on the real thing. DI was accurate according to my mocks. And even Quant performance was anticipated since I was struggling with my quant score on the mocks too.

Also felt that point deduction for incorrect answers was harsh on the real test compared to the mocks. Is this a thing?

I am aiming for T10-15 with a scholarship which means I obviously need a retake and an enormous score boost. I know I can score significantly better with the right study plan and consistent efforts. Also, planning to go with a test prep course to alleviate my score. I need some advice regarding retake, test prep course and when should I ideally apply.

Background:

1. Indian female applicant with an engineering degree. GPA: 7.52

2. 3 years of work experience in IT as a Development Analyst. A little bit of mentorship experience.

3. Leading a team in an NGO. Experience: 3 months. Joined in April 2024.

4. I have extra curriculars on my profile too but nothing significant recently: a) Classical music instrument: Cleared two state level exams while in school b) Volleyball: District level (also while in school) c) Dance: Participated in inter-college fest d) Was active member of college student association

My questions:

1. Which prep company should I opt for? Specifically to increase my Quant score. I am good at math and I know I’m doing something very wrong. So probably need to unlearn a few things and start fresh.

2. When should I plan my retake? Which takes me to my next questions.

3. Don’t think I’ll make it in time for R1. So should I retake and apply in R2? Sceptical about R2 because I have heard chances of scholarships are better in R1. Also being an international applicant, I guess R2 would be late.

4. Or should I retake by October/ November, and then build my profile and apply next year? By then I’ll have good work experience and also one additional promotion (including leadership responsibilities). My NGO experience would also be valuable because right now it may seem like a padded application since I started only in April this year. I’m planning to take a few additional courses to prep towards a pre-MBA profile.

If someone can help with these doubts, it would be highly appreciated! Frankly, I feel lost right now :(
Hi sreehere,

1. Yes, it is possible that the penalty is higher on the real exam. The reason is that the real exam has experimental questions, whereas the practice tests don't. So if we get an operational (non-experimental) question wrong on the real exam, the penalty may be higher. On the other hand, getting some questions wrong may make no difference (if those questions are experimental questions).

2. Apart from the suggestions you receive from forum members, if you're looking at companies that offer recorded sessions, you could consider taking a free trial as well. If you're considering live classes or tutoring, recommendations from others will be less useful, as your experience will depend almost entirely on your instructor(s).

3. As far as your verbal section is concerned, I think you could retake quite soon. V88 is a great score, and it's possible that your V81 was just a case of underperformance.

4. R2 isn't late. Target R2 if you think you absolutely need more time. That said, I usually recommend a combination of R1 and R2.

5. You could postpone your MBA plans, but it may be better to go ahead this year. You can always apply again if you don't make it. However, this really is your call, as it involves an investment of time/money.

Overall, 605 is a good score, especially given that this was your first GMAT. I think you're in a good position to push this score up. All the best.

Hi sreehere,

I want to address your first question.

Regarding prep courses, in addition to seeking advice in this thread, take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant courses, and also read through some GMAT success stories to see what materials have worked well for other test-takers.

Lastly, if you need any additional advice about how to proceed with your prep, feel free to reach out and I'd be happy to help.

It should be easier for you to increase your Quant score as you suggested that it is not really reflecting your command over Quant. Also, Quant seems to extend the most heavy hit on your percentile in a section-wise manner.
Hey thanks for the reply. Yeah, I agree. Quant is really pulling me down. And also, even if I end up scoring a competitve percentile overall the Q79 will look bad on my application I believe.

Yeah, struggled with time management in Quant and Verbal both. That's the reason I guessed a couple in Verbal (questions after 12) and got most of them wrong.

Thank you so much for the detailed response AjiteshArun.

1. I wasn't aware we had experimental questions is Focus too? This would be news to me.

2. I'm fine with no live sessions. A structured study plan in itself would be super beneficial/

3. Yeah, time management is where I flunked in Verbal. The RCs passages were super long and dense compared to the mocks and practice questions. I think I spent a lot of time on the first RC itself. Again, not sure it was the exam jitters. But before a retake, I need to work on my Quant. Can't apply with an overall good percentile but bad Quant score :(

4. Given my profile, do you think R2 is fine to secure a scholarship in T15-20? Obviously assuming a GMAT score boost. Could you please let me know what you think?

5. Yeah I can always apply again. But I heard that getting accepted into a school which rejected you before is harder. Not sure if there is any truth to this.

Thanks ScottTargetTestPrep. I am actually considering TTP as I have heard loads of Quant improvement stories specifically giving credit to TTP.

Hi sreehere,

Yes, the new GMAT also has experimental questions. That's how GMAC makes new questions (for future GMATs). As for video courses, you can find many, many reviews on GMAT club (for a very small number of courses though). Take trials, if possible.

I do recommend aiming for at least Q80/V80 (in line with INSEAD's position), and quant seems to be where you can really improve your score, so your plan to work on quant before your retake makes total sense. However, I would again recommend spreading your applications across R1 and (if necessary) R2. In my experience, any specific advice on an applicant's chances of getting a scholarship is usually nothing more than a (bad) guess.

Finally, as far as reapplying is concerned, it's not as bad as you may have heard :). Reapplicants should make an effort to show some improvement, but most of them should be fine. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that only applicants who weren't accepted because of a red flag of some sort are at a major disadvantage. Many, many other applicants are rejected for no fault of their own. TL;DR: The process is unpredictable and can even be unfair. Treat it as a numbers game.
