Appeared for the GMAT Focus edition in center on 22nd November. This is my short journey and experience.
Background - An engineer from a reputed Indian college, working in AI as a data scientist.
Prep - I started preparing for the GMAT classic around mid October. I took the e-GMAT free test to identify where I stand. Got a 620.
I did worse in CR and RC compared to SC.
Took a Udemy course to start preparing. The course was short and good but didn't cover everything. I started practicing using GMAT club
forum quiz. Kept referring to Manhattan guides and got better in all 3 topics. Took an Experts GMAT Mock as well and the official mock. But couldn't cross 700 and V38.
Then I found out about GMAT Focus edition in end of October. Took a free mock from e-GMAT again and got 595, majorly because of DI. I had done 0 preparation for DI so far.
Took a week and started going over DI in depth. Next mock from
Experts Global and I scored 645.
Was scoring 80+ in all sections now. Practiced a bit more using GMAT Club questions and got 665 in the first GMAT official mock. DI required significant speed improvement since my first GMAT Focus Mock. Took the second GMAT Focus official mock and got 745 where 10 questions had repeated from the first official mock. This was very disappointing since it ruined the overall test experience. I answered faster and more accurately, but this score wasn't indicative of my real ability. But it gave me immense confidence and I booked the exam that night for the next day (luckily got a center slot).
Exam day - Only listened to music all day with minimal prep. Went in a happy mood to the center with a clear mind. Concentration was the main thing. Had always practiced to do Verbal - Quant - DI because Quant had always been easy where I saved time. I could utilize excess time in Quant to use the washroom between Quant and DI sections. And I took the optional break in between Verbal and Quant, since Verbal always left me a little tired.
Verbal - A little tougher than mocks, could finish easily but questions were harder which made me feel good during the test because I knew my level was good but left me unsure about a few answers.
Quant - finished quite early and easily, unsure only of 1 answer.
DI - was never prepared for what happened! It was extremely difficult and very lengthy. Had 20 mins left for 10 questions which was very less. A graph question took 5 mins. I had to answer all DS questions by just reading them. Was very hard pressed for time and ultimately fluked 2 questions at the end. Was very dejected since I was doing well in my DI mocks. But every question was really tough and needed 2+ mins easily.
Was very relieved to see a 675 on my screen after this exam experience. Was aiming for anything 645+
Breakdown - quite surprised with this honestly.
V83 Q87 DI80
Percentiles - 86,94,86
Verbal - 7 questions wrong
Quant - 2 questions wrong
DI - 9 questions wrong!!
In mocks I used to get similar scores with lesser wrong answers.
Nonetheless quite happy now, thank you GMAT Club for collating resources in one place! Could spend minimal on my prep because of this!
