Hi all,

I took the classic GMAT in Jan this year and scored a 720 (Q46 V42 IR 8). I needed to start prepping for the focus edition immediately after but I was just mentally exhausted and had an intense period at work. I’ve now finally stopped procrastinating and decided to get back to GMAT prep. What would be a good strategy to go about this considering I do have some background of the GMAT.
Hi Floyd97,

As EducationAisle mentioned, you may not need to take the GMAT again.

That said, the new GMAT isn't too different from the old one, at least in terms of content tested. You may want to work on your quant though, as Q46 would normally mean that there's some room for improvement. On the other hand, you have an amazing verbal score, so you may not have to work too hard on that section (unless SC was a major strength). Finally, your IR8 indicates that you'll most likely do well on DI as well. You may, however, need to adjust your time targets and do some more DS (including "verbal DS").

All this is to say that you're in a very good position to get a great score on the new GMAT.

Hi Floyd97,

A great way to prep for your retake is to engage in topical studying. In other words, be sure you are focusing on just ONE quant, verbal, or DI topic at a time and practicing just that topic until you achieve mastery.

For example, let’s say that you want to practice Number Properties. You can do so by answering 50 or more questions just from Number Properties: LCM, GCF, units digit patterns, divisibility, remainders, etc.

After each problem set, thoroughly analyze your incorrect questions. For example, if you got a remainder question wrong, ask yourself why. Did you make a careless mistake? Did you not properly apply the remainder formula? Was there a concept you did not understand in the question?

By carefully analyzing your mistakes, you will be able to fix your weaknesses efficiently and, in turn, improve your GMAT quant skills. Number Properties is just one example; follow this process for all quant, verbal, and DI topics.
